Someone was surprised to learn that I yeet bugs out instead of *gently relocating* them.

I appreciate the gesture. But in the tropics, seeing bugs where they shouldn't be is an hourly—not weekly thing. You learn what can survive a yeet to save time.

Here’s a modern sea urchin spine in thin section which shows gorgeous stereom microstructure - this biomineralised & complex porous arrangement contributes to the high strength & excellent damage tolerance of echinoderm skeletons 🖤 (viewed in xpl, fov: 1.5mm)

The spine displays stereom microstructure which has a porous three dimensional arrangement built out of trabeculae. In life, the pore space (stroma) is filled by fluid, connective tissue cells and extracellular fibrils. The spines are single crystals based on magnesium-bearing calcite. And although calcite is inherently weak and brittle, this microstructure allows echinoderm skeletons to exhibit awesome mechanical properties.

I have long wanted to see a crab spider, and have never had any luck. But… Last June I saw this in an Oxeye daisy patch growing beside the drive. I wasn’t sure because a) it’s upside down, and b) it was very windy and the flower kept waving about.
So what I want to know is: is it a crab spider? 🤞🙏

These are the world’s most ridiculous slippers and I love them!
