It’s just finished, and I thought it was excellent. In short, if you can identify whether or not something in a photo *is* a plant, you can help. I’ll be blogging about it.

Symbiotic diversification relies on an ancestral gene network in plants
Symbioses have been fundamental to colonization of terrestrial ecosystems by plants and their evolution. Emergence of the ancient arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis was followed by the diversification o...

Any historians of science want to jump in to discuss how Friedrich Laibach, a (Jewish, by several accounts) member of the Nazi Party, managed to flourish during and after WWII? Laibach first proposed Arabidopsis as a model organism.

🌻🪖 War is turning Ukraine’s fertiliser problem into a catastrophe 🧪

Long-term declines in nutrients, and soil damage, have been turbo-charged by the Russian invasion. But a new plan may help restore some of the world’s most fertile soils.

How a humble weed became a superstar of biology

Arabidopsis thaliana was always an unlikely candidate for the limelight. But 25 years ago, the diminutive thale cress launched the botanical world into the molecular era.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Identifying on iNaturalist: How you can help!. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
At its core, iNaturalist is about people helping each other identify and learn about the organisms they observe, but did you know only about 10% of the iNaturalist community identifies observations…

UC Berkeley Botanical Garden houses crucial seed bank to preserve biodiversity

At the University of California, Berkeley, Botanical Gardens, you'll find a critically important bank. It doesn't store hordes of cash or glittering gold bullion. This bank stores seeds.

Meet the guardian of Dublin’s trees, who is making contingencies for climate change as he tends to ‘urban forest’

Balancing resilience with disease and weather changes, along with finding the right spaces for planting, are part of the job for Ludovic Beaumont.

In the concrete jungle that is Dublin, some green spaces still flourish – and trees hold a place in many city-dwellers’ hearts.

🧪🌾PAPER - What makes a tree a tree?🧬

Read the paper by @siribirkeland.bsky.social and @trhvidsten.bsky.social with contributions from several UPSC researchers.

By comparing dozens of genomes, they offer fresh insights into the genetic foundations of woodiness and perenniality in angiosperms.
Tree evolution is surprisingly quirky! 🌳 Trees are likely ancestral in many plant groups, often re-evolve on islands, and Arabidopsis can be made tree-like by tweaking a few genes. We revisited what genes really make a tree a tree using comparative genomics. @trhvidsten.bsky.social #trees #evolution
