This week @scottzona.bsky.social is talking about flower morphology. He takes a different theme each week/month. Follow for an introduction to botany and plant morphology 🌷
This week, let’s look at flower descriptors, starting with symmetry. If there is only 1 way to divide a flower into 2 equal halves, it’s zygomorphic or bilaterally symmetrical. Orchids, like this Rhyncattleanthe Guanmiau City 'Black Flower', are good examples. #Orchidaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Yes, forest trees die of old age. But the warming climate is killing them faster
The warming climate is killing Australia’s forest trees at a faster rate. This offers a glimpse of what may lie ahead for forests globally.

Throwing some extra facts into the ring. Denmark, in response to the request from the US, sent troops to Afghanistan and Iraq. The US already has military bases in Greenland.

The sepals and petals have collective terms. The calyx is the collective term for sepals; the corolla is the collective term for petals. Taken together, they are the perianth. The model is Datura metel 'Belle Blanche' #Solanaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Interesting aspect to the call for a Royal Commission
I’m still amazed that the sub judice aspect has been ignored in the rolling media campaign for a Bondi royal commission.
In case you’ve not read about it (and why would you) I’ve written about it here:

This is a warning to all world leaders who antagonise Trump
If the US president gets away with an illegal invasion of Venezuela, why not Xi Jinping, who has a flawed but genuine historical claim to Taiwan?

Whatever you might think of Maduro, the seizure and kidnapping of a head of state takes us to a very dark place. Vast, arbitrary, extra-legal power, which could be exercised almost anywhere, regardless of the character of the target government.

Another super mild night in GREENLAND.
After a max >+10C, The night Minimum at Narsarsuaq was +7.1C ,much higher than most of Europe.
and one of the warmest nights ever recorded in Greenland in January.

We will have 3 more freeze-free nights in some stations:one whole week !
Another no-freezing night for several stations in GREENLAND

It's possible that some stations pass a whole week without ever dropping below freezing.
That's crazy for January, when the no-freezing nights are rare and hardly ever more than 2 in a row.
Most of Europe is colder (minimums) these days..

This is deeply sad news. Professor Emma Johnston has passed away.

Emma did groundbreaking work on the ecological impacts of human activities in marine ecosystems.

She was way too young to leave us. A major loss to the field of ecological science. Vale.
