From last month at Estero Llano Grande NWR (TX), this Ladder-backed Woodpecker was bedecked and bedazzled with speckles and spots!

A small woodpecker rests on the side of the tree with its bill pointed upward. The birds back is black with white "rungs" and the front is whitish with small black spots. A red crown indicates that this is a male. The face is whitish with two thick black stripes, one from the eye backward and one from the beak that goes back and curves up at the neck. Behind the beak and above the eye, he has black streaks with white spots that segue into the red crown. It is a very handsome bird.

A barn owl rests on a large branch that cuts the frame vertically as our perspective is from far below. S/he seems to have her eyes closed and we see her in profile. Speckles cover the back of the head and down the shoulders. Otherwise, the owl is colored white and rich browns with a few black accents and widely-spaced barring on the tail. The surroundings are large woody branches and thin green evergreen needles.

I'm going alt today. My most photo'd bird is the Anna's Hummingbird. We have them year round, and they're just fun subjects. #hummingbirds
A male Anna's Hummingbird in mid air. Its wings are blurred with motion. It's almost in profile, but facing slightly away from the camera, giving a good view of its tiny feet tucked up next to its abdomen. Its tail and abdomen are iridescent green, but its gorget looks black as it's not refracting light. The background is dark green at the top fading to a lighter tan color at the bottom. There are scattered white rounds of blurred light throughout.

This picture represents both the Mandarin Ducks of Orange County and the wood ducks. This is specifically one from Costa Mesa where back in September it was the solo duck left in the park. This is just the cutest picture ever taken in my life and I can't ever beat it I don't think.

My editing final exam was a simulation of covering a campus shooting for campus media while on lockdown.

I pointed out you should not share locations where people are hiding while a shooter is at large.
