Not to say that I was excited, but I was literally the first person to enter the gallery for the members' preview of the new Frida Kahlo exhibit at MFAH. It was exceptional!! #art
The painting by Frida Kahlo pictured is the 1940 Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. Kahlo is facing forward expressionless; her trademark thick eyebrows meet in the middle. Her hair is in an upsweep with butterfly clips on top. There are big thick leaves behind her with two dragonflies hovering above. She is wearing what looks to be a simple white peasant blouse. The thorn necklace is tight around her neck and then spreads down toward her chest and shoulders like tentacles; there is a Hummingbird hanging from the necklace. There are drops of blood on her neck where the thorns have pierced her skin. Over her right shoulder is a monkey; over her left is a black cat.

I watched these two birds for a good two minutes before they flew out of sight. The caracara was obviously looking to make a meal out of the kestrel, but the kestrel wasn't having it. The kestrel ducked and dived and dodged and weaved and was more or less flying circles around the caracara. I saw it as a metaphor. The caracara was the big bad bully with the orange face (yes, I know I'm anthropomorphizing a bird just following nature, but get over it). And the kestrel was the rest of us. Just trying to live our lives and survive. We have to keep ahead of what's coming down the pike, not even knowing what that is. We have to be able to turn on a dime and change gears constantly from sorrow to anger to despair and back again. Once the pair flew behind the transmission pole, I lost sight of them, but I firmly believe that the kestrel got away and made it to safety. I'm hoping that the rest of us get there too.

An American Bittern is standing perfectly still among the reeds with its head held straight up. The buff and brown streaked coloring of the bird allows it to blend in to its environment well except for the two eyes that give it away.

On my first birding trip of the year on Sunday, I went to Attwater Prairie Chicken NWR for the first time in a long while and saw so many raptors, including this Short-eared Owl. Also saw an American Pipit. Both were new lifers. Bodes well for the year!

From last month at Estero Llano Grande NWR (TX), this Ladder-backed Woodpecker was bedecked and bedazzled with speckles and spots!

A red crown indicates that this is a male. The face is whitish with two thick black stripes, one from the eye backward and one from the beak that goes back and curves up at the neck. Behind the beak and above the eye, he has black streaks with white spots that segue into the red crown. It is a very handsome bird.

Honestly, this isn't the most exciting bird. It is brown on the back and tail, buff on the chest and belly and has brown streaks on the throat. The bird is perched on a branch with a tree and blurred greenery in the background.
