Not a new lifer, but the first time I got a decent photo of a Clay-colored Thrush was at Estero Llano Grande SP earlier this month. Also, not the most exciting bird but we all have our place in this world!

Honestly, this isn't the most exciting bird. It is brown on the back and tail, buff on the chest and belly and has brown streaks on the throat. The bird is perched on a branch with a tree and blurred greenery in the background.

I finally finished going through photos from South Texas. At 9 venues along 145 miles, I saw roughly 92 different species with 6 new lifers. And 2 days out of the week were bad weather!

I'm still going through photos from my week-long trip to South Texas that ended a week ago (I try to take fewer photos, but I never do.) This one from Laguna Atascosa NWR felt like a Monday kind of post. It reminds me of Houston rush hour, but prettier.

From earlier this month at South Padre Island Birding Center, I saw my first juvenile Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. The head and eye are unmistakable, but the rest of the color pattern will change a lot going into adulthood.

Two ducks are standing in shallow water. They have gray beaks and legs which will change into a bright pink-orange beak and pink legs in adulthood. The body is mottled buff and brown. As adults they will have a brown back, white wing stripe and black belly. The one thing that is roughly the same as adults is the buff head with a brown racing stripe down the center and a large brown eye ringed in white.

A very large member of the Antelope family is seen standing at the side of an asphalt road with a sign that says One Lane Road Ahead. There are trees in the background. This Nilgai is a male as established by his two straight horns that look to be approximately 5 or 6 inches long. The males are generally 4 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder with a small head and a large barrel-chested body that slopes to the rear. His legs are very long. The nilgai is mostly brown with a white patch at the throat, white patches visible on the inner thighs in this photo and white and black "socks" just above the hooves.

This is literally the last picture I took on my final day of birding in South Texas last week. Poor weather with fog had me about to give up, but I went down one last trail and found this new lifer, a Black-throated Sparrow.

Last week in Mission, Texas, I saw a new lifer in a most unexpected way. I didn't even have my camera with me! As I walked out of a restaurant, I was greeted with the cacophony of a group of wild Green Parakeets.
