Moorhens are known as Gallinules on this side of the pond. Here is an immature Common Gallinule standing in a bed of water lettuce at #BrazosBendSP (TX), October 2025.

This immature gallinule, a chicken-looking bird, has the gray and brown coloring and white side stripe of the adult but lacks the bright red face shield and upper bill of the adult. This gallinule is starting to show the yellow tip at the end of the bill, but it isn't as bright and well-defined as it will become later.

American Kestrel (a small raptor) is perched on a telephone wire and is looking to its right. The bird has a buff belly with black spots near the wing and more spots on the gray wing and the rust colored back. The underside of the tail is an interesting pattern of buff and black. The top of the head is gray. There is a streak of black under the eye, then a patch of white, then another streak of black at the back of the face, then a patch of buff before another another black streak at the back of the head. The colors and patterns on this bird are fascinating. And beautiful.

A small bird on a pine bough is looking directly at the camera with large black eyes. A bit of the gray wing and white and buff colored belly can be seen, but it is the coloring on the head and throat that makes the bird stand out. The top of the head and a big patch on the throat are black, but the eyebrows and either side of the throat is white. This bird has a few white eyebrow feathers sticking up, giving it a quizzical look.

This is one of the least exciting photos I took during my last trip, but the Sage Thrasher on the roof of a building at Las Vegas (NM) NWR was a new lifer (and a fairly cool-looking bird) so I kept it.

Happy #CritterDay, y'all! I saw this dude at the Nature Conservancy in Santa Fe last month and it looked like something out of a horror film. According to Google image search, I think it's a robber fly. It give me the heebie jeebies!

This one is going to be hard to describe. Some kind of insect is standing at an angle on a small branch. It has a huge black eye and is mostly light colored with white fuzzy stuff on its head and darker legs. Two of what I think are its back legs are sticking straight up so that they look like antenna. The wings are sticking straight out to the side.

About a dozen Sandhill Cranes in shallow water with grasses bathed in the golden glow of sunlight in the background. One crane has taken off and is a few feet above the water while two others are just inches above the surface. The cranes look more golden than gray in the morning light.
