A master of none.
“For Kant, great poems take a concept – it could be a transcendent concept like ‘eternity’ or ‘God’ or an interesting, normal concept like ‘envy’ – and drag it to a place halfway between pure reason and experience, where concepts fall apart but the imagination itself turns into a form of reason.”

For the first time in about 70 years, net immigration to America could be zero. Beneath the noise of tariff and budget fights, migration may well be the biggest economic story of 2025.

@j-amesmarriott.bsky.social Hi James. I broadly agree with this column. But I disagree with the blanket contention that oral cultures "tend not to produce masterpieces of analytic philosophy." Ancient India, a largely oral society, produced great and very influential works of analytic philosophy.

I know this is upsetting to some people but it is important for health research and treatment for *all people* to be able to make a distinction between biological males and females. The facts of biology, though, don’t mean we can’t be nice to each other.
The U.K. Supreme Court rules that Britain's equalities law defines a woman as someone born biologically female. The ruling means a transgender person with a certificate that recognizes them as female should not be considered a woman for equality purposes.

Europe should wake up and realise that their American daddy is not going to foot the bills anymore. They gotta make all the nasty sacrifices that independent adulthood demands. They need to shed their image of a weak, wobbling, decadent, eternally -vacationing continent, and get to some real work.
France can't get from 2% to 3.5% more spending on defence without cutting somewhere else. It can't borrow more (debt-to-GDP is well over 100%) and it can't tax more (trust me I've lived there).

Either France benefits from EU-level borrowing or it cuts social spending or people work more.
Emmanuel Macron calls for a new target of spending 3, 3.5% of GDP on defense. It’s the first time France publicly comes up with a new number. www.lefigaro.fr/internationa...
