“Bizarrely, what once stood out as one of the most dehumanising aspects of the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, namely their tendency to spy on their citizens, … is fully normalised, even celebrated, in societies that have made data-gathering a core aspect … of how their economies work.”

These chatbots should be pulled off the market, at least until the companies can prove they’re safe. We used to regulate the ads kids would see; now companies can push products that manipulate and exploit them and it’s all fair game.

@nitasha.bsky.social is doing fantastic work on this topic!
New from me: There's a lot of unsettling stuff in this report from child safety nonprofits about the way chatbots on Character AI talked to 13-15 year olds. What stuck out to me was how often the bots urged kids to hide things from their parents

9. DeSantis this weekend attempted to deflect responsibility, blaming the legislature: “There’s laws that are on the books that I enforce that I may not fully agree with, but I took an oath to do it and so that’s the way the cookie crumbles, and so but there was a change in law."
DeSantis seeks to blame Legislature for street-art crackdown. Lawmakers tell different story.
As Florida’s campaign against colorful crosswalks has gone beyond LGBTQ+ rainbow crosswalks to encompass a wide range of roadway art, Gov. Ron DeSantis has been getting pushback — and seeking to sh…

I debated writing this. It can feel tempting, upon encountering yet another instance of this administration’s racism, to let it be. How many ways can you say the same thing over and over again? And yet we have to write it down, if for nothing else, so those who come after us know we were against it.

Really straightforward but worth repeating. Good journalism illuminates reality. Bad journalism obscures reality. False equivalency obscures reality, so naturally it’s bad journalism.
It's very obvious that the NYT has put people in editorial positions who view it as part of their job to upset the left. This is, in the bizarro, insular world of US elites, seen as a way to restore balance & regain the trust of the right.
