After a vote to re-open the podcast, we got down to some very non-essential business.

We're joined by @thedishwasher.bsky.social to discuss his look at an Orioles Offseason Rubric.
Episode 418: Grade Expectations - Bird's Eye View
This was not a very fun week of Orioles Baseball. On the plus side... on the plus side... we'll get back to you on that.

Really enjoying seeing the Orioles use their 3% increase in tire kicking.

This year's more expensive, more underwhelming product is going to be SO EXCITING!

The Blue Jays got our no. 1 free agent starting pitcher, which is great for them. But also that ranking doesn't tell the whole story about Cease, and ooooooo $210 million (even with deferrals) is a lot of money
Blue Jays Render Unto Cease What Is Cease’s: $210 Million
Cease is the realistic worst-case scenario for a pitcher who’s the best in the world at the two most important things a pitcher needs to do.

On Dylan Cease's dollars -- if you assume 4.0 WAR next year, declining by 0.5 WAR a year going forward, $10M/win right now and a 10% growth of $$/WAR going forward, you get 7 years and $210M.

That's an effective $40M for 2026, down to $15M for the last year.

(Ignoring time value of money.)

There's really no such thing as a "good" deal for a top free agent SP. But if you lack a top SP you can either choose to overpay for one or do what the 2025 Orioles did...
Dylan Cease sets the market early, as Jon Heyman reports it’s a 7-year, $210-million deal. It’ll be a pricey class of starting pitchers and the latter half of the contracts may not age well. But that’s the going rate

2 of the best pitchers available the offseason were moved this week for prices that the Orioles could have afforded to match/beat

There better be a move coming that makes missing out on these players make sense

maybe Cease was never gonna come here! Sonny Gray probably wasn't! but watching 3 other teams in the AL East constantly try to get better while the Orioles "raised the floor" and prospect hoarded is bringin me down, folks

The Orioles could have just had Dylan Cease for the last 2.5 years if Mike Elias had done his job in 2023

Sad, sad, bump.
Look, I know it can be disheartening to see a division foe make meaningful offseason moves, but can I interest you in these magic beans?

I would have offered 7/210.

I would have offered 7/230.

This sucks.

I can’t even fathom Imai signing with Orioles.

But if he did, I’d be at all his games.

Every year the Red Sox do all the things I want the Orioles to do. Very frustrating.

Wonder if there’s a there there around Cade Povich and Tyler O’Neill (+ $$) for Mitch Keller.

Cade goes right into Keller’s spot in the rotation, O’Neill gives them a RH power bat (albeit one with some ?), and paying down some of O’Neill’s salary and moving Keller’s clears some space for a FA bat.
