@maxfawcett.bsky.social @senatorpaulasimons.bsky.social @kpateonthehill.bsky.social and @beynate.bsky.social have been sounding the alarm regarding toxic social media oligarchs.

As an ex-ad exec, I implore the 🇨🇦 ad industry to pull their budgets from these SM platforms
Canada has the opportunity to help create a global tech landscape that isn’t dominated by US oligarchs.

That won’t happen if our political leaders refuse to quit toxic platforms like Twitter. What are they waiting for? #cdnpoli

Twitter is a litmus test for Canada
With Twitter, the medium really is the message — one that should be clearly unacceptable for our elected officials and political leaders.

Following Ken Jennings has dramatically improved my BlueSky experience
If you are anxious and sad about the state of the world, that's fine, and there are plenty of strategies for dealing with that. But I think you already know that drive-by online dooming isn't a strategy. It's selfish and adolescent. It's a contagion that only spreads the worst of you, not the best.

Sad how leaders are grovelling instead of outraged at American imperialism!
Never was about drugs (anymore than weapons of mass destruction) but about oil!

One of my greatest worries about climate was “countries will not trust each other enough to do this” but that’s actually become somewhat moot as renewables have become way preferable for many growing countries precisely /because/ they do not trust temperamental petrostates.

I clearly remember putting my bike in the shed and mom calling from the window “Carmen, Buck Rogers is on!”

The street lights had just come on so I knew it was time to come home. But I think the days were getting longer so I almost missed the start!

Rage & fear have driven media profitability since the mid-90s* but the scale & immediacy of social media has ruined us.

*Newsstand sales of Canadian papers used to spike when the cover had a story related to biker gang violence. Fear is profitable
Although the scale of this is still to be assessed, this is the inevitable outcome of the monetization of the algorithm. Rage-bait becomes a personal revenue model. Nothing about this should be a surprise.
NEWS: I spent the past 24 hours going through major MAGA accounts on Twitter, and a bombshell development has become clear: most of the right-wing ecosphere is being fed propaganda from foreign actors.

This impacts elections. This impacts discourse. This is major. Subscribe to support my work:

I hear grumblin about density this #calgaryelection Surprised few ppl talk about the zoning impacts on city taxes. IMHO I want great services & low taxes and would vote for candidates that support this (meaning high density is fine with me 👍)

Let's begin. And let's use measles as an example....

Today’s target: “mRNA vaccines change your DNA.”
This myth spread like wildfire during the peak of the COVID pandemic. Unfortunately it persists today. It sounds scary, but it’s biologically implausible. Here’s why. 🧵
