Passing on a note from a colleague: People with federal student loans should download their files IMMEDIATELY. These files are currently on the studentaid.gov website, which may get deleted if Trump follows through with his EO to shut down DOE

As someone who speaks “far right wingnut,” I feel obligated to point out that the creation of the federal income tax in 1913 has been an obsession with such folks since the1950s. They mark it as the moment America went off track and started careening toward socialism, and they want to get rid of it.

The Tulsa Race Massacre was not committed by an uncontrolled mob but was the result of “a coordinated, military-style attack” by white citizens, the Justice Department said in a report. It was the first time the U.S. government has given an official account of the 1921 massacre of Black residents.
Tulsa Massacre Was a ‘Coordinated, Military-Style Attack,’ Federal Report Says
The Justice Department’s conclusion follows an investigation of the 1921 atrocity in Oklahoma in which up to 300 Black residents were killed.

I've been interviewing lots of conservative Republicans in Texas about rising opposition to vouchers on the right and so many of the rural Texans I've talked still remember the one room school house - and they do not want to return to that era...
Great title! And @jenniferberkshire.bsky.social brilliantly nails the relevance for today.

When MAGA types sell us schools from the “good ol days,” remember:

Early schooling was “chaotic, inadequate, and expensive.”

Authorities said a second-grade student called 911 to report the Wisconsin school shooting.

"I'm going to let that soak in for a minute," Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said. "A second-grade student called 911 at 10:57 a.m. to report a shooting at school."

You wanna know how different groups got to be considered white? PBS already did the hard work making this article & TWO docs (& even interviewed a bunch of racists)

The Irish, Germans, all of Eastern Europe, had to basically beat & murder a ton of POC to be welcomed

How a shifting definition of 'white' helped shape U.S. immigration policy
The definition of "white" has changed over time, but historians say it has always influenced immigration policy in the United States.

Happy Rosa Parks Day 🙏🏼 Also want to give Claudette Colvin her flowers. At age 15, she refused to move to the pack of the bus 5 months before the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955.

Fabulous work by @jenjennings.bsky.social to show what the Texas 'optional' curriculum squeezes out/erases from MLK's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" in 5th grade lesson.
Time is zero-sum. When Texas adds Bible content to its curriculum, it is going to supplant, not supplement, other content.

The most remarkable example I've identified is their 5th grade teaching of MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail.

This statement perfectly captures the politics of my great-grandfather—a super racist and misogynist lower middle class son of Jewish immigrants who faced a lot of antisemitism and responded by trying to stake a claim on whiteness. He cut ties with his less racist relatives, calling em “Communists.”

If anyone is curious about why Biden designating ~1M acres around the Grand Canyon as a national monument is a big deal in some parts of Indian Country, you could do a lot worse than read this piece by Havasupai councilwoman Ophelia Watahomigie-Corliss:
Uranium mining threatens our home, the Grand Canyon
Since time immemorial, the Havasupai have lived inside the natural wonder. We face yet another peril.

Big changes to college athletics and conference realignment will certainly be an adjustment for student athletes. Good questions that highlight the tug of war between higher education and the “business” of college sports, which too often goes unnoticed.

Kenneth Clark: "Integration, as a subjective and individual process, involves attitudinal changes and the removal of fears, hatreds, suspicions, stereotypes and superstitions."
