The Trump administration claims the right to throw a man with legal status into a black hole Central American prison, affording him no due process, to admit afterward it was a mistake, and then to get snide with the judge who tells them to fix it.

Yes, the stock market may be tanking and our national security apparatus has never been more vulnerable and we're on the verge of both economic collapse and war, but it was all worth it to keep pronouns out of email signatures.

Yeah the unfortunate reality is that people have no idea how scientific research supports their standard of living. They also have no idea how much research depends on federal funding, training infrastructure, etc. We are headed to the dark ages
The entire edifice of higher education in the United States was built in large part on public funding. This is a foundational aspect of how this nation built a strong educational system.

Also, that federal funding goes to research at a scale that is impossible to support privately.
Columbia is a private university, they can do whatever they want. Why are federal dollars going to a private school anyway?

Once again, I don’t know what anyone has seen in the last two months now to make them believe that the 2026/28 elections will be free, fair, & competitive. “We are totally unconstrained by either Congress or the courts” is now their default position on everything.

They claim they can snatch people up, put them on planes, and deport them to a country run by an authoritarian, where those people will be forced to work slave labor at an inhumane prison. All without due process, and in defiance of federal courts.

The hypotheticals are over. This is the nightmare.

This part requires particular emphasis. The whole goddamn point of judicial process is to ensure---both for the individual and the public at large---that the state is actually doing what it says it's doing and to the right people.

Many Democratic politicians have forgotten that leaders can shape public opinion, rather than just always follow it.

Republicans learned this lesson over a decade ago.

Elected officials should not be a moving polling average. They should be humans with values and willing to stand up for them.
