In English we know it as “Carol of the Bells,” but the melody arises from a Ukrainian folk tradition of songs welcoming the new year and summoning the forces of nature to meet human labor and bring prosperity.
Do listen.
I wrote about the history here: snyder.substack.com/p/o-generous...
Another beautiful Shchedryk performance amidst ruins.

It was set in what used to be a DTEK thermal power plant — now destroyed by russia.

The contrast between russia’s destructive nature and the Ukrainian will to create beauty even in the darkest times is palpable.

Politicians complicate things. But this whole issue of why the House has closed down for the past 5 months and why Adelita Grijalva isn’t sworn in yet likely isn’t complicated at all. The answer is likely pretty damn simple: Trump is most likely a pedophile, and Speaker Johnson knows it. That’s all.

NYC Comptroller: Trump helped ICE turn Manhattan courthouse into an ‘abduction trap’
Asylum-seekers in New York City believe they’re doing the right thing showing up to scheduled hearings in immigration court. But lurking in the hallways are ICE agents laying an “abduction trap” for them. New York comptroller Brad Lander urges Americans to see what’s happening for themselves: “You don't have to risk arrest or put your body on the line to bear witness, to sit in court and show up to let people know their rights."

TN State Rep on working in the minority, against the odds: ‘Democracy is built up in the margins’
Tenn. Rep. Justin Jones is compelled to run for office even when the odds are stacked against him and to serve, even as part of a Democratic super-minority in a deep-red state legislature. “And even when I vote,” he tells Ali Velshi, “I always write out my dissents because I want to send them as a love letter to the next generation to say, ‘This is where we stood. This is why we stood. And we hope that by the time you read this … in the history books, you know that we were laying the groundwork for you to inherit this victory.’”

Why Do So Many Of Us Shout “No Kings?” Because We LOVE America
Republicans keep calling it a “hate America” rally. Bullshit. They say that because they’re partisan. They say that because they’re scared of this No Kings movement. To reaffirm that founding American principle that we are not ruled by kings here is to reaffirm absolute LOVE for America.

I am sounding the alarm that the GOP is engaged in an all out attack voting rights and free and fair elections. Voter suppression, gerrymandering, and troops in blue cities are just some of the ways they are using to try to rig the rules to keep power in 2026 and beyond.

Pay attention and act!
