Next year is America’s 250th birthday, but in many ways the celebration — and the fight over how we frame history — begins right now. On @thisdaypod.com we are launching the America250 Watch newsletter. We plan to be thr home for news, analysis, and more —> open.substack.com/pub/thisdayp...

In 1976, the most popular TV program was a re-airing of GONE WITH THE WIND -- in 1977 it was the premiere of ROOTS. That kinda says it all... our two-part look at ROOTS is out this week. First part in the podcast feed, subscribe to the newsletter for full video.

Next on "50 Weeks That Shaped America" -- the TV show ROOTS brings the story of American slavery to the masses. Lucky for us, we have @kcarterjackson.bsky.social, who literally wrote a book on ROOTS, as our guide. Paying subscribers to our newsletter get full, ad-free access tomorrow! thisdaypod.com

This turned out really well. A masterclass led by @pastpunditry.bsky.social on how the language evolved after 9/11 from retribution to a forever war. We talk David Frum, the neocons, religion+war, and how just as quickly "axis of evil" gave way to "war on terror."
This week we look at how the phrase "Axis of Evil" changed everything after 9/11. Full, ad-free video is up for paying newsletter subscribers now! thisdaypod.substack.com/p/the-axis-o...

As I say on the show, you'd be hard pressed to come up with one story to better reveal the social and political swirl of early 20th century America. Race, class, religion, urban/rural, women's rights... it's all in there. Along with prohies, bootleggers, and rum-runners.

One of the conceits of my account is historical markers say a lot about the people who put them up, and the times in which they did. This is a case where not putting one up also says something. www.npr.org/2026/01/06/n...

@kcarterjackson.bsky.social I love @thisdaypod.com and especially the All In the Family episode. However it was Al Bundy on Married With Children, not Ted Bundy
