The Department of Homeland Security is using a little-known legal weapon, targeting dissenters with administrative subpoenas. MSNOW Legal Analyst Melissa Murray says the Trump administration isn’t using them “to fight crime or enhance public safety, but to minimize public dissent.” Tech reporter Joseph Menn warns, “This isn’t an isolated case.”

The Post’s billionaire owner, Jeff Bezos, declared in 2016, “Democracy dies in darkness,” but critics say he is now turning out the light. Former Executive Editor Marty Baron said, "Things have been made dramatically worse by the behavior of the owner.”

From facial recognition and phone tracking to spyware, data brokers, and drones, ICE is expanding its tech arsenal under Trump’s mass deportation push. As Minnesotans respond to and resist the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, "rapid response" groups have organized to keep an eye out for federal agents and alert their neighbors. St. Paul City Council Vice President Hwa Jeong Kim, who volunteers as a part of one such group, says that "our main goal is to observe" and that "we know our streets and our neighbors the best." Kim says she views the group's work as "a form of nonviolent protest" to hold the federal government accountable.
