definition of a gentleman that i can live with. as an atheist/agnostic, i would like to believe this definition could apply to a wide swath of humanity without unduly insulting those of just about any peaceful, respectful, inclusive faith or culture i can think of.
This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:

I need everybody to read this and understand what’s going on. These are spouses of US citizens in the country legally. They have entry clearance and green cards, they’ve passed background checks and have no criminal records. ICE is taking them anyway.
