Thinking about which directors really set out to make movie star movies. Guadanigno is the obvious. Soderbergh is great at it but doesn’t always do it. Coogler with his one favourite actor. Who else is doing it?

Something I’ve observed a lot on the casual left is a feverish belief the right will fail on their own terms when they do something radical. We saw it when Musk took over Twitter and fired loads of people (lmao the site will fall apart!) we see it now with Trump’s government.

Realised it's been nine years since we've had a non-Marvel live action film featuring Tom Hiddleston in any role at all and had to stare at the wall for a bit. Hollywood, get your act together.

If Netflix are looking for other British high concept dramas to license for the "Because you watched Adolescence" list they should dig up that Channel 4 one off where they dramatised a public execution of Gary Glitter.

The scene in On Falling where she finally gets paid and immediately goes and buys six pastries is haunting me

I think this is a really good piece, but I expected it to more explicitly point out that "male supremacist" thinking is obviously going to be more appealing to white men. Yes alienation is real but also no one else is being told they deserve the rule the world - that's obv pretty seductive.

My water bill goes up 43% this month and my block doesn't have meters so I can't even reduce my water use to mitigate it. Desperately hope no one unravels this system it seems great.

In fact every time I log in here I just seem to see a bunch of people telling me off for not having more fun which tbh is not not very encouraging
"I want to switch over to Bluesky, but I just don't get the kind of engagement I get on Twitter."

Wow, you mean your strategy of following 18 people here and showing up once every three weeks to complain about how quiet it is hasn't paid off? Surprising!

I don't mind watching stupid films myself but I've found it pretty valuable reading/hearing from critics completely siloed from blockbusters. Always fun on the Film Comment podcast when they have to mention superhero films in passing and become totally bemused.

Also though, there’s no point arguing with the Cinemascore that other movies are worse. It’s not a measure of quality but of audience sentiment. The Green Knight got a C+!
‘CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD’ debuts with a B- on CinemaScore.

The lowest CinemaScore ever for an MCU movie.

There's one useful but underdeveloped point in this mostly daft piece: Corbet has inaccurately transposed the kind of turbulence you see on film sets into architecture and construction. Reminds me of jazz musicians pointing out Whiplash is more of a sports movie. www.theguardian.com/film/2025/ja...

Brady Corbet’s Oscar-tipped film is clearly based on real-life modernist master Marcel Breuer but brazenly misrepresents him and his revered modernism

There's a really weird certaintly Trump is going to be obsessively obnoxious about the Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong Oscar nominations despite the fact he's posted precisely once about the film since its premiere 8 months ago

For all I can accept that Oscar voters see something in Emilia Perez that I don't, this is so completely baffling to me. Did they just not watch other movies this year? 13 nominations???
How well did EMILIA PEREZ do? With 13 Oscar nominations, the movie led today’s field, and if Selena Gomez had managed to snag that supporting-actress nomination, it would have tied the all-time record of 14 nominations held by ALL ABOUT EVE, TITANIC, and LA LA LAND.

"Don't you think when people tell you you're allowed to do whatever you want as long as it's not sexually X-rated that they should stand behind their word and show your cow?" Lynch said.
One of my favourite small David Lynch moments is when he tried to do one of those ceramic art cows for New York City and submitted this and was rejected.

I personally know a number of documentary filmmakers who are perceived as having had a fabulous success because they played a lot of festivals and won some awards and were considered for Oscars, but they basically spent a year of their lives, promoting their work for no money
