🎉BUCKET LIST BYLINE ALERT🎉: For @avclub.com, I wrote about the transcendent, haunting TRAIN DREAMS (which is still playing @thegrandcinema.bsky.social ) and how it cuts into the Pacific Northwest. It's got history on its mind just as it urgently speaks to the present📽️

NEW: For Rev. David Black, the pastor seen shot in the head w/pepper balls by DHS agents in a viral clip, protesting ICE is part of an old Christian tradition.

“I’m seeing almost a revival of Christianity through what’s happening at Broadview in Chicago,” he says. religionnews.com/2025/11/19/f...

For anyone wondering, some possible dog names have survived from cuneiform sources.

On tiny dog figurines found buried under a palace in Nineveh, Iraq are inscriptions that seem to be names.

dan rigiššu “loud is his bark”

munaššiku gārîšu “biter of his foe”

mušēṣi lemnūti “expeller of evil”

"The cyclists arrive at sunrise, rolling through Chicago’s Latino neighborhoods and stopping at tamale carts, elote stands & candy stalls. They buy out every last item — every tamale, every corn cob, every bundle of sweets. Then they load up the food and deliver it to shelters and families in need."

Can you believe this is how we live now?
Chicago may experience less tear gas use as Operation Midway Blitz winds down. Cold and wet weather reduce effectiveness, while wind adds unpredictability.

RIP Tatsuya Nakadai. I interviewed and was star struck by him twice. Once was on stage at the Museum of the Moving Image after a screening of the paranoid spy comedy AGE OF ASSASSINS, and once was for @ebertvoices.bsky.social: www.rogerebert.com/interviews/a...

@hickenlooper @bennet.senate.gov DO NOT CAVE ON HEALTHCARE! If you ever want to hold elective office in Colorado again, you'll have to stand firm. I'm a so-called senior--we vote--and I don't know anyone who holds a different opinion on this.

It’s so funny to have read all of Joyce’s books in the 70’s and 80’s, and now I get to see her kicking rich assholes in the balls. She’s always been odd, but she has guts.

Generally, the mainstream white churches tell her they will not help her. Lots of “Sorry we don’t do that” thrown her way.

The predominantly black churches largely offer assistance.

The mosques? They jump at the chance to help. It’s extraordinary.
