All my feed is terrible news. Here is a moment of mundane Philadelphia graffiti for a breather. This was from my walk yesterday. I find these heartwarming for some reason. Innocent rebellion?

The kiwikiu, Maui #parrotbill, is a critically endangered Hawaiian honeycreeper. It's wild population is estimated at 135 individuals, & although it's predicted to go extinct within the next 5 years, according to a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) report, scientists are working hard to save it.

A few folks sent me messages about some unusual pigeons that appeared on the show Andor. Thank you! They are real pigeons and not CGI. They belong to the group of breeds called Pouters or Croppers. Here’s an illustration of an English Pouter from my book A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching.

Went to a comedy club last night and this fab dragon mask was abandoned in an alleyway behind a vacant building. So many questions for this little buddy… 🐉 #Minneapolis

Poised for incoming migratory birbs here in central MN! The anticipation is almost too much!
Nice spread of migration tonight. More birds coming through the land route into TX.

I’m screaming too, Paddlefish, I’m screaming too.

ALT: Paddlefish feed by swimming with their large mouths agape, using a paddle-like rostrum to detect plankton. The plankton is filtered out of water using gill structures. They appear to be screaming.

Happy World Book Day! 📚 Feeling pretty lucky to have had access to these precious resources throughout my life. Loads of opportunities for sharing knowledge, fostering creativity, and encouraging exploration.

Wishing you heaps of excellent books, whatever the format!
Etymology of the day: ‘book’ comes from an ancient root shared by ‘beech’, a wood that people used for engraving inscriptions. ‘Paper’ comes from ‘papyrus’, and ‘volume’ is from the Latin for a ‘roll’ of parchment.

Happy World Book Day.

Was not familiar with this fish prior to seeing this post. Am now 100% interested in learning more about our fangy, finny, punk rock fish friend. Fascinating 🤩
Alepisaurus ferox, or the longnose lancetfish. Seen as bycatch with no commercial value. A vital monitor for ocean health. All fang and fin and punk rock. A fish to rally behind for the modern age.✊

A little basking sea turtle (Green I believe?) for your feed from Pā’ia, Maui.

There’s a lot of ugliness in the world right now. Reminding myself to acknowledge the light and life has been more challenging lately. Turtle definitely helped. 🌊
