True, individual citizens have 0 options but if enough of us came together to address it we could fix it. So far all I ever see are grey haired sign holders and angry social media posts- individuls trying to get someone else to solve the problem. Corruption & tolerance of it are two sides of a coin.

A friend’s disgusted reaction to Paul, Weiss:

“So many non-profit lawyers have been so busy working on cases against the unconstitutional actions of the Administration, because the big firm lawyers with multiple houses and cars and boats and every other damn thing are too fucking weak to do it.”

Germany literally de-industrialised their economy over the course of the war as more and more civilian machine plants (tractors, trucks, etc) were converted over to military use.

Without the Marshall Plan, Germany would have faced a famine that would have killed millions in just a couple of years.

This works if you build what is essentially a closed war economy but if the Third Reich had been run like a half-assed Libertarian Protectionist State with a miniscule industrial capacity I don't think this would've worked.
I'm getting tired of posting this. Markets do just fine in authoritarian regimes. The economy is not collapsing. Stop counting on this happening. It won't.

Let me break this down for non-lawyers:

1. By tomorrow at 10 EST, someone with Cabinet-level authority has to update the Court on whether they're invoking state secret privilege.

2. By 3/25, the judge wants a sworn statement from a government official on whether the privilege will be invoked
NEW: Boasberg's patience is wearing thin.

"In an ex parte pleading delivered shortly after today’s deadline, the Government again evaded its obligations."

He orders government to show cause as to why it didn't violate court order by failing to return migrants on 2 planes that departed March 15..

this stuff is happening across the country and even more intensively downstream of the veterans admin but it's happening in so many places at once and without any public notification that it's still only barely emerging in the news
A friend drove two hours today for her breast cancer chemotherapy only to learn it was canceled due to NIH cuts. Clinical trial ended midstream. No treatment, no restart, no plan, no information. Her bro-in-law's chemo was also canceled.

Fun economic facts:
f you're age 60, 69.1% of all job growth since your birth occurred under Democratic administrations.

If you're 45 years old, that number is 74.7%.

If you're under 30, the number is 100%.

this is macroeconomic nonsense parading as "common sense" by someone who doesn't understand that "paying down the national debt" is not actually a good thing for the United States to do

people need that debt

So......it's just made up.

But every morsel of disinfo exists for a reason, and in this case, the 'WHAT ABOUT CHINA' meme has acted as an exonerative plea from high-emitting countries that can afford to quit fossil fuels: a sort of geopolitical fatalism used to justify greed.

I haven't read the full article, but it's striking to me how revoking tax status of nonprofits "critical" of that comemierda is described as "attacking the players and machinery that powers the left". It continues the horserace framing and ignores that attacks on civil society also damage democracy

Just because they could hold such a vote doesn't mean it would happen. They *could* do things right now and they don't.

It's not the rules, it's the people who are either cowards or don't care whether their own country has democracy in name only. As long as they keep *their* jobs.

Yes, & this is especially true of presidential systems, where dual claims of direct legitimacy from voters exist, & extraordinary measures like impeachment are required to remove the authoritarians. But ultimately, yes, if folks don't care about their oaths of office, well...here we are...
