Tara overestimated my reading, as people often do. She gestured to one essay: so much information arrayed there. No, I said, look. You can put things in an essay that you yourself do not know. There is a library all around you. You take a book off the shelf, find the fact or the sentence and put it where it fits. It never belonged to you, you never really had it. It comes from the library, it goes back to it. And it waits there for the next one who needs it. Really it's choosing a lifetime of homework, I said. Did they ask you to write about the X-Files? someone piped up. No, I wanted to write about the X-Files.

Purposefully being a little annoying here, but my take is that if you can make it through a book, you're not too young for it! A book can't just ~happen to you~ like a movie, they're kinda inherently age-gated.

I think AI is going to eventually tank in the longterm, but...

the only real way to combat this is single-interest communities. Forums, user comms, etc, with a barrier to entry. They become trustable knowledgebases. It's really the only way forward is to return to what worked best the first time

It's now overrun by Al made up patterns that make no logical sense. My wife said if you tried to crochet the pattern that Al hallucinated, it wouldn't even be possible. And it's like, why? Why is someone ruining free crochet patterns? How were they even aware of that corner of the internet? Is there a plan to make the internet so unusable that people abandon it so we don't have access to information anymore?"

I was eight when Sam & Max Hit the Road came out. Playing this with my *own* eight-year-old last night felt like I was walking into the past, except Lost in Play feels like a modern adventure game that's deeply approachable for kids and families. Great stuff.

Accelerationism says that it’s futile to try to oppose or reform capitalism; instead, we have to exacerbate capitalism’s worst tendencies until the entire system breaks down. The only way to move beyond capitalism is to stomp on the gas pedal of neoliberalism until the engine explodes. I suppose this is one way to bring about a better world, but, if it’s the approach that the A.I. industry is adopting, I want to make sure everyone is clear about what they’re working toward. By building A.I. to do jobs previously performed by people, A.I. researchers are increasing the concentration of wealth to such extreme levels that the only way to avoid societal collapse is for the government to step in. Intentionally or not, this is very similar to voting for Trump with the goal of bringing about a better world. And the rise of Trump illustrates the risks of pursuing accelerationism as a strategy: things can get very bad, and stay very bad for a long time, before they get better. In fact, you have no idea of how long it will take for things to get better; all you can be sure of is that there will be significant pain and suffering in the short and medium term.
