Hey, it's #Portfolioday! My name is Briar, and I'm a Black and Indigenous queer comic colorist.

I specialize in bold colors and dramatic lighting. I've worked previously on Strange Bedfellows(Ariel Ries) and with Arledge Comics.

The more time that passes without Brianna there to prevent her self-absorbed mum from overwriting the memory of who she actually was, the easier it becomes for Esther to fabricate a non-existent, idealised yet troubled cisgender son (brainwashed into transness) in her place.

She has two names tattooed on her wrists, celebrating the births of her children. On her right hand, it says Alisha in smudgy black ink; on the left, it says Brett. For 14 years of Brianna’s life, she was Brett. Through the book, Ghey makes a clear distinction. She refers to Brett as he, Brianna as she. Does it seem like two different people? “It does, though that’s not necessarily because she went from Brett to Brianna, it’s just the natural stages of life. It was important for me to talk about Brett as well, because to understand where Brianna was at, you need to understand the whole life.” In Under a Pink Sky, Ghey doesn’t mention the killers by name, so I won’t. But she does name the mother of the girl, for a good reason. They have become friends.

Esther Ghey's actions are the reason I just had a conversation with my siblings and fiancee, instructing them to ban my parents from any future funeral or memorial in my honour, along with anyone else using any kind of rationalisation to deadname me.

Brianna Ghey was not murdered for being Esther Ghey's daughter, and Esther locating the problem of her daughter being murdered by radicalised cis kids in her daughter being trans is a result of her class loyalty. She simply wants to prevent kids from being trans. She gets no more grace from me.

When you are trans, outliving your parents is far from a given. When you are trans, there is a great likelihood that your own funeral will be held under a fake name by people who have no regard for who you were or what you wanted. I am lucky to have people in my life I can trust to fight that.
