A former UK prime minister held responsible for tens of thousands of deaths while the US president calls for elected politicians to be hanged.

A jolt of a reminder that law and policy are ultimately about life and death.

And politicians are often not up to dealing with such things.

Indeed. And as my Presbyterian-raised mum used to delight in telling us when our Xmas demands got a bit much, Christmas wasn’t even a bank holiday in Scotland until the 1950s.

(Hogmanay is still where it’s at, for her).
As we move into “foreigners are cancelling Christmas in the name of political correctness” season it’s worth remember that Christmas was indeed once banned in England, by Christians and the man who enforced the ban has a statue in his honour outside the Houses of Parliament.

Shabana Mahmood: Illegal immigration is tearing the UK apart.

NO!
UK politicians are tearing us apart by pointing at refugees, to cover up the poverty they've caused!

Labour's 20-year waiting list for refugees is just performative cruelty.

A Government of cowards.

Rather than tackle inequality - they've gone for pensioners, disabled people and now it's people fleeing war and persecution.

They can't get away with this.

Brian Leishman mate at some point you have to notice that the party that keeps doing and saying the thing does in fact stand for the thing
Labour MP Brian Leishman: "The Government has surrendered to... the vile rhetoric of Reform. Does the Home Secretary not see that removing the legal obligation to support asylum seekers who will be otherwise destitute, is as far away from Labour Party principles and values as we can get?"

The Labour Govt oppose a modest wealth tax on the assets of the Super-Rich yet they are happy to seize the assets of asylum-seekers who have little to nothing.

Keir Starmer has betrayed every value & principle that the Labour Party was set-up to represent.

We don't need to "protect our borders"

Our biggest threat doesn't need to cross a border to harm us.

From a yacht, billionaires can move markets, pressure govs, dodge taxes & bankroll politicians to rewrite our laws.

The threat isn't the "outsider"

It's the concentrated power already inside.

Removing asylum support. Seizing belongings. Deporting entire families, including children.

Labour are not just paving the path to a Reform government. Reform may as well already be in power.

This government has no moral compass — and it should be ashamed of its inhumanity.

How have we found ourselves here as a country? A supposedly centre-left government unable to rule out child detention.

Will Labour MPs now ask – how have they found themselves here as a party? And, more importantly, what do they plan to do about it?
Lots of Labour MPs asking Mahmood tonight to rule out child detention. She won’t rule it out. That’s because forced removals of families will mean children in detention for periods.

Home Office ruling out deportation of lone minors but the changes will certainly mean more detention of children.
