Our piece of shit government just broke its promise for $500,000 to the LGBT Center here in Sacramento, so we're trying to raise some emergency funds! Anyone who can help out with a $20+ donation gets all 3 Midnight Pals PDFs free as an added bonus! (Note me to claim your prize)

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

The Stonewall Inn released a response to the National Parks Service removing the word transgender from the park outside of the Inn. A great reminder that we have to look after each other

I read 12 books in January. Unusually, my two favorites were both non-fiction:

- Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H, a memoir by a queer Muslim immigrant coming to terms with the intersection of those identities, all beautifully told in the context of stories from the Quran.

My quilt about women’s reproductive rights has been banned from all American Quilters Society shows this year. It’s been part of a traveling show with SAQA. My artist statement is too long for here. It’s on my website: laurashaw.net/quilts#/your-mother

I think I am totally done with Instagram, so let’s see if we can build a quilting community here on Bluesky.

Here’s my most recent quilt, maybe my favorite of all I’ve made so far

Sick of people calling everything in crypto a Ponzi scheme.
Some crypto projects are pump and dump schemes, while others are pyramid schemes.
Others are just standard issue fraud. Others are just middlemen skimming off the top.
Stop glossing over the diversity in the industry.

My New Year’s resolution this year was to read more non-fiction books, after realizing that I only read 3 last year. Now at the end of December, I can say it’s been a massive success! I read 21 non-fiction books this year, 5 of which I rated at least 4.5 stars.

Ok time for a few favorite reads of the year:

- Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell. I was nervous about this because I don’t do horror, but I loved the monstrous protagonist. She was extremely cool and the central relationship was delightful. I also loved [spoiler for ending] SO MUCH.

A tour-de-force of scholarship and detective work: Fara Dabhoiwala reveals that a portrait of an 18th-century Black scientist, long dismissed as a caricature, is in fact a record of the man's mastery of Newtonian physics—and the only painting made in 1759 of the return of Halley's comet.

The only certainty about the picture is that it shows Francis Williams. No one has ever been able to discover who...
