All teachers need more time to do their job well.

Period.
Full stop.

Teachers of literature (and all humanities, really) need time to be good students so they can be good teachers of their content and craft. The world changes so fast and we need time to study it.

What a message! Thanks to @maddow.msnbc.com for sharing this so I could read this excellent piece.
I just saw Hamilton again this weekend here in Seattle and remembering the work it took to stand-up to King George III and win is front of mind. Now is the time to fight an aspiring dictator and win.

counterpoint: WE DON’T HAVE KINGS IN AMERICA AND I DO NOT INTEND TO BEND THE KNEE TO ONE is a profoundly more effective message than whatever this farting around is, go listen to the great khan of the plains
Dear media:

Please do not waste time hyperventilating about this dumb comment.

It’s intended to be a distraction from all of the damaging actions he’s taking.

Focus on those.

There is zero chance we are going to let Senate Republicans pass the most pro-billionaire and anti-middle-class budget we have EVER seen the easy way.

I will not sit by quietly while they try to take food off families' tables so they can put more fuel in private jets.

Today is the #DayofRemembrance for Japanese internment. On this day, we remember the injustices suffered by Japanese Americans who were stripped of their freedom and their rights for no other reason than their heritage.
Cherry Kinoshita was incarcerated at Puyallup and Minidoka during WWII, and went on to become a JACL leader. In this clip, she describes the very first #DayOfRemembrance in 1978 when 2,200 people caravanned from Seattle to the site of the Puyallup Assembly Center.

The Forest Service layoffs are already hurting our community, with dozens of local employees out of jobs and sites like the Denny Creek Trailhead shutting down due to staffing shortages.

And it’s only going to get worse. Fire season is coming, and this decision is putting the 8th District at risk.
President Trump's pathetic decision to fire thousands of hardworking U.S. Forest Service employees who protect our communities from devastating wildfires is beyond reckless.

It’s dangerous, shameful, and an attack on the safety of the Eighth District.

Forest Service fires 3,400 people after ‘deferred resignation’ deadline passes
The cuts amount to about a 10 percent reduction in the agency’s workforce.

True story: a few years ago, I was being interviewed by a reporter for the New York Times. I mentioned the history of eviction statutes and how they tied into Jim Crow.

The reporter asked "what's Jim Crow?"

When I explained, the reporter didn't believe me and said the US wouldn't do that.

A bright spot from my middle school classroom has been teaching and discussing Emily Dickinson’s “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers” with my 8th graders. It’s been a challenging week in the world, but talking about metaphors has been a really great reminder that the dumpster fire will burn out.

I sure hope this story gets to the point that TikTok didn’t need to shut down in the US on Sunday since Biden said he wasn’t going to enforce it. So it’s all smoke and mirrors and showmanship for the purpose of propping up the incoming administration. Because that TL;DR is missing from the headline
Starting on Saturday night, TikTok was unavailable in the U.S. as a result of a new law that banned the company’s apps in the country. By around noon on Sunday, it was back. Here’s what to know.
What We Know About the TikTok Ban
The popular video app went dark in the United States late Saturday and then came back around noon on Sunday, even as a law banning it took effect.

to recap:
— Trump was *for* the TikTok ban
— which the GOP Congress passed
— and the GOP Supreme Court upheld
— and even though Biden said he wouldn't enforce the ban, TikTok shut down anyway
— so that Trump could "save" it
— and the media fell for it
we really do live in the dumbest fucking country

I spent Saturday in the very festive Leavenworth and enjoyed some sights away from the main drag. The sprinkling of snow made it the perfect early winter excursion!
