Rob Pike getting incandescently mad about AI makes me like it more, no matter how much he's in the right on this one

does anyone else know about Seven Days In May, a cold war political paranoia thriller where two men with impeccable chins face each other down over nuclear annihilation and nothing happens? take off your shoes, I don't know any Russian numbers stations

Someone the other day raised the idea that we shoulda had a Muppet Hunt for Red October with Scott Glenn as the only human actor, wherein he gets increasingly frustrated by their muppet shenanigans, and I have not been able to shake that movie from my brain since.

AI tools won't put SREs out of work, exhibit N+1

(liver damage might, but)
Can't wait for the loosened up, non-perfect, but quickly shipped AI-enhanced updates to hit my banking and insurance services next year.

Im sure there will be no issues there at all.

If you lose your long snapper, you cease to be able to do very fundamental football things.

Remember the Weber St game a few years ago - kid got the yips, and ended up launching the ball into the end zone for like 4 safeties.
Long snappers are the unsung heroes of the special teams unit - all the attention goes to the punters and kickers, long snappers need love too

me planning and executing a decadent pie-based menu to start my christmas vacation: Haha fuck yeah! Yes!!

me staring down a fridge full of rich pastries and braises when all I want is a light lunch: Well this is a pretty great problem to have but it's still a problem

christmas dinner: week little tourtière-like pie in babby's first hot water crust, bacon braised green beans from last night, and a carrot chickpea salad type situation

pie crust was a bit scant for what I needed and this one leaked between the shell and the top, but a good texture 🍽️🍜

to paraphrase Cory Doctorow, AI won't steal your job, but AI peddlers WILL convince the idiot executives of your company to fire you & replace you with an AI that fails to do your job
The exec that said "we thought it was farther along then it was" is absolutely the greatest issue right now. Not only is it not capable of doing any of these things on a broad scale, it will do them significantly worse than any employee. Going all in on something to boost stock value that fails.
Honestly im shocked

Well

Not that shocked

And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, but slowly crawled up the blade of grass, and, at the top, bit down on it, and fell asleep. A hitherto unseen fungus burst forth its fruiting body from the back of his neck, and rained fresh spores down upon all the children below
And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, notices in the snake’s eyes, which look back without giving any less attention to the future, the first coating of the opaque milky-blue leucoma snakes get when about to throw their skins and become new—meanwhile continuing, of course, to grow old,
And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, saw the best minds of his generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix.

Impressed by the very on-point pun the flared response (the top one) worked in at the end.
We occupy a very specific niche when it comes to the public discussion of history, and that niche is serious answers to the question of how bamboozled Hitler would have been by big chungus memes.
