Boost your Bluesky!
Tips in this🧵
If Bluesky seems dead or low activity on your end it might be that you haven't yet made the most of its design. It's different from Twitter in some key ways so you have to interact differently. I'm writing these tips below from my non-techy perspective, techies please weigh in if I get things wrong:

Something very strange is happening to the Web. Finding something from the past on search engines is eroding. Atemporality replaced by an immediate, constantly vanishing, consumerist hyper-present. What we thought was an infinite Borges-ian library turning into Amazon checkout with a ticking clock…
Google is changing up search. What does that mean for news publishers?
A shift to AI-generated search results will decrease the traffic that Google sends to publishers' sites, as more people get what they need straight from the Google search page instead.

My favourite fact about Iceland is that we have many, many crime writers but only one forensic pathologist, and he was so busy answering all of their questions that he decided to have a small seminar for writers to get some peace.

It immediately sold out so he had another one that also sold out.

Just a note to new users - when posting links - hit the "add link card" to ensure a bit of a preview/picture of the link shows up, otherwise all you get is the URL

Alt-Text Update!

Since the influx of new users on July 1st, use of alt-text for images posted to Bsky has fluctuated but some new features and community education have quickly set the norms for the new folx.

Usage went from 26.6% -> 18.6% -> 23.9% (yesterday)

Let's keep that number climbing!

AOC gets it🥇
I like it here and I don’t think a mega corp Twitter clone can kill spaces like these.

There is a high level of original thought and engagement, people care about each other and maintain a strong space minimizing bad faith, harassment, and disinfo, which lets people be themselves & build community
