NEWS: A day after the Minneapolis shooting, Secretary Noem quietly signed a new policy barring congressional visits to ICE facilities without a week's advance notice. That policy change led to three MN Dems being blocked from accessing an ICE facility today. www.politico.com/news/2026/01...

They’ve laid off the people overseeing one important angle to the bird flu outbreak: the scientists overseeing the safety of pet food. Infected raw pet food has killed numerous cats at this point, even if it was frozen first. But that’s gone now so
How will cuts at FDA impact U.S. response to bird flu?

We're told agency's top veterinarians overseeing contaminated pet food indeed laid off

And chief medical officer Dr Hilary Marston who had been overseeing MCMs for humans and agency response

No disabled person in all of America is surprised by this. Forced sterilization of disabled people is currently legal in 31 states. It happens all the time. The fact that a state department official advocated for it is upsetting but frankly mundane and par for the course.

OK, I wrote my “who’s going to enforce it?” piece. It’s a lengthy read, trying to respond to a lot of questions I’ve gotten over the past three weeks, but it’s about democracy so I decided it was worth it to lay out in depth, with examples, what I’ve been talking about here and elsewhere.
Don't let Donald Trump and Elon Musk talk us out of democracy
Trump and Musk are testing the limits, trying to sell America on being an authoritarian state — but they can’t do it unless we allow them to do so.

Blaming persecuted minorities and political opponents is the demagogue’s crutch in times of adversity, but it’s especially unpersuasive here with the United States coming off a fairly sterling sixteen year streak of aviation safety.
It would appear Trump is currently suggesting blame for yesterday's horrifying mid-air collision lies with Biden, Buttigieg, and DEI.

The president has not, however, provided any examples as to how any of that impacted this specific crash, in which a military helicopter hit an airliner.

Despite his promise that he "will not interfere in state affairs," President Yoon just approved the resignation of Interior Minister Lee Sang-min.

He also appointed Oh Ho-ryong as the new first deputy director of the NIS, just before announcing that he would entrust the state affairs to his party.

Seeing people in the comments speculate that national service is the reason for this reluctance. Please remember that national service was in place during Gwangju Massacre in 1980. The reluctance comes from the fact that not too long ago, the military _wasn't_ reluctant to shoot civilians.
something that is especially clear if you have studied colonialism a bit: a load bearing aspect of maintaining even a semblance of democracy (or defending a sitting autocracy from democracy) is having a military that is unwilling to kill its own citizens

“The world deserves more context and a nuanced understanding from international journalism about what South Korean democracy is facing, as its fight for justice, transparency, and the rule of law holds lessons for all democracies.”
I was preparing to pitch an op-ed on the nationwide protests calling for President Yoon's resignation, aiming to provide global context amid the limited international coverage.

Given the urgency, I’m sharing it now. I didn’t expect events to escalate this quickly. #SouthKorea #Democracy
