This is probably faulty logic but it's not like anyone is checking people's levels unless they actually get in a crash, and thus if the level is set too low it could normalise breaking the limit

Not saying people take this too seriously, but last time this topic trended I made a single comment that I didn't think it was right to imply fish & chips weren't British because Jews made them and someone got so angry they added me to a blocklist called "People Who Don't Like Black American Food"

The #BBCPM argument that "elderly people with free bus passes prop up bus routes" has little connection to reality - just read a newspaper from 2010-2019!

Invading Greenland would in a sane world be the end of Atlanticism but at this point, with this crop of politicians, I'm not even sure if it would be

if they did January 6 today, it'd be called "January 6-7." Thank you for reading. RIP Ashley Babbert

This is good and we shouldn't have drivers on the road who can't see - but I worry about elderly people being essentially confined to their house

I have to make an honourable mention for The Jolly Post Office which was a favourite of mine when I first went to school!

You can kind of tell how wassailing as a door-to-door practice was superseded by caroling since pretty much every wassailing song is, whilst fun, pretty much the same

Currently in bed with a cold and spent an inordinate amount of time wondering how someone could sincerely claim Paul McCartney and the Beatles were bigger than Jesus
Here’s a fun top five: things that are consensus among historians but are essentially unknown by the public. Richard I, a bad king of England. Roman Empire, fell in 1453. Paul, more important than Jesus. Witch burning, a modern phenomenon not a medieval one. Britain last invaded in 1688. Yours?
As someone who wrote a dissertation on that damnable Frenchman; one can only hope.

Whilst posting can unfortunately shape public conversation to an extent it hasn't in the past, it is also one theatre of many and seems to drive a lot of people mad (me included!)
we also really need to prevent the mindset that posting is a form of political action, short of actually going outside, because so many people think aggro'ing enemies online is the same as building a public, imo
tbc i’m not endorsing this model but it’s as Sharon says: the natural cost of short-form communication in a forum with immense reach.

the fact that this reach spans conflicting ideologies and different languages makes the problem worse, even without the pressure cooker of current events.

Every time it snows, local news stations interview people who seem incandescently angry at the concept of weather. How do these people function in daily life? And why should I care about their opinion?

Someone on an online forum analysed videos of the Crans-Montana fire incident and was able to piece together a timeline from how far along in the song they were.

That's a singular 'song': the time from ignition of the ceiling foam, to flashover explosion, was 75 seconds.
It's astonishing this can still happen in a wealthy country with modern fire regulations.

in the old Twitter days people used to brag about how they made Twitter unprofitable and impossible to sell to respectable media companies
I see a lot of people being like "what's the deal with the deranged bluesky elders" and basically it's that in the before times there were a lot of people who made it their mission to drive people they didn't like off the platform & that's how they got their following
January 5, 2026 at 12:49 PM
These people always talk as though they are leading a grand societal mobilisation against someone and obfuscate the fact that in reality, them and 50 other people are going to be constantly annoying to you and collectively hope someone is deranged enough to do something horrible

Very enjoyable - although I've cooled a bit on it recently, it's still a very fun game.
