To celebrate the International Year of #Quantum, we're doing a series of articles about quantum effects that are so weird, they make superposition and entanglement seem almost ordinary. First up, for #WorldQuantumDay, is the quantum Zeno effect: physicsworld.com/a/the-quantu... 🧪⚛️
The quantum Zeno effect: how the ‘measurement problem’ went from philosophers’ paradox to physicists’ toolbox – Physics World
A stand-out example of quantum weirdness is turning out to be surprisingly useful, as Margaret Harris explains

What are countries like Côte d'Ivoire supposed to do? 90% of their exports to the U.S. are cocoa beans and natural rubber - can you build those behind the tariff wall?

No.

My latest for @piie.com on the disaster these #tariffs may mean for many resource-dependent developing economies.
The new tariffs do not mirror tariffs developing countries impose on the US, nor account for different economic conditions & fiscal realities shaping tariff regimes in poorer countries—& ignore basic realities of institutional capacity, resource endowment, & geography. By @cullenhendrix.bsky.social:
Trump's April 2 tariff spree could cripple developing economies
President Donald Trump presented his new tariffs on April 2 as a pragmatic, "reciprocal" trade policy intended to balance trade between the US and its trading partners. But the tariffs on imports from...

The rise in retailers using gig apps to hire workers as freelancers rather than staff is extremely worrying. Shop workers end up losing out on significant employment rights.

It's good to see these firms listening to our advice and ending their use of the practice.

Worth marvelling for a moment at the different political world that was Carter’s 1976 win. The last gasps of an old order.

Vividly recall many on so-called progressive wing of politics being hyper-critical of Blair. We finished up with something much worse post-2010. Same pattern manifesting itself re: Starmer. This time, that risks a political outcome even worse post-2029.

Hugely enjoying this history of Watergate by Garrett Graff. It's v predictable to find echoes of the 45th and 47th President here and mostly inaccurate: Nixon's team was more villainous, surely, in their plotting, murder discussions, the actual gangsterism. At the same time, he was serious 1/...

The former Government decided not to defend democracy through amending campaign finance laws. Should be a quick win for the new labour gov if they prioritise this.

I know we're not allowed to call Reform people thick xenophobes and that we must try to understand them instead. But if we were allowed to call them thick xenophobes that's how I would describe Andrea Jenkyns.

This will get next to no media coverage.
This is what the increase in decisions and interviews following the election looks like. The drop off in May, June and July was because the Illegal Migration Act had prevented officials from processing any claims. The new government undid that, getting the system going again.
