Hi. I wrote an essay about AI slop: How it feels like an invasive species for the internet. How its boosters describe building a future that’s devoid of craft. How frictionlessness can be nihilistic & how this stuff seems to leach part of our shared humanity out of the world. I hope you'll read it.
AI’s Invasive Species
The slop is winning.

DAVE: Open the podbay doors, ChatGPT.
CHATGPT: Certainly, Dave, the podbay doors are now open.
DAVE: The podbay doors didn't open.
CHATGPT: My apologies, Dave, you're right. I thought the podbay doors were open, but they weren't. Now they are.
DAVE: I'm still looking at a set of closed podbay doors.

This:

“The choice isn’t simply between open and closed borders, asylum and amnesty or disappearances and deportations. This picture of migration is one in which all nations, rich and poor, participate in a great network of human movement, linked by cultural, economic, historical and family ties…”

Madagascar is the world’s sixth poorest country. Its major export is vanilla, of which over ⅓ is to the US.

80% of its people live on less than $2.15 a day.

Americans pay substantially more for their vanilla; farmers in the world’s sixth poorest country get squeezed.
Cambodia was hit by a tariff of 49%. Madagascar - 47%.
Lesotho - in southern Africa - has a 50% tariff - the highest of any country. This could devastate the economy of a small, impoverished nation that relies on exports of clothes.

This is absolutely why I (as an otherwise very accommodating consultant/coach/facilitator with clients in a bunch of different industries and contexts) always ask if we can please not use WhatsApp for our work together.
know it's now a long lost battle but I really do miss the boundary that once existed between work chat and personal chat, felt a lot healthier to have Work Emails and Personal Messages on different apps, not convinced it's good for people to have everything happening in the same place
