Apparently knitting in the car will fool an Apple Watch into thinking you’re standing and moving and even exercising. I mean it is a sort of exercise I guess…?

I spent 8.5 hours in the car today but miraculously have closed all the rings. 🤨

yup it's a form with no geographical checking for fake address, emails, or phone numbers. Abigail Williams saw Sarah Good, Bridget Bishop, and Goody Osburn consorting with the devil in the women's bathrooom a fortnight past at the Provo airport.

Applies for many universities as well.
1. Left-leaning institution faces internal push to end racism/sexism
2. Insitutiton adopts liberal identity pastiche that does little to nothing to end those practices
3. Reactionaries then point to said empty gestures as proof of radical influence
4. Donors/board push institution to the right

Truth.

Also applies to the exhaustingly needy one that outgrows its pot every time you look away and constantly requires another chop-n-prop.
You know that one plant you have that you've been struggling with for years and it's always on the edge of death and it's so frustrating that you actually hate it? You can actually just throw it out and be free. 🌱

Somebody needs to stop OpenAI now. Voice Engine will only be used for fraud and to unemploy people.

The legitimate business use case is replacing customer service reps with AIs that sound human and condemning us all to the eternal hell of lying customer service that can’t resolve any problems ever.

Day 4 of being too sick to do pretty much anything. Been doing clear liquids only and that’s helped a ton.

Still feel stoned when completely sober, and not in a fun way, which just means falling further behind on pretty much everything. But also not really caring because I feel like hot garbage.

This is not even satire, McSweeney’s.

All but a couple paragraphs are a fairly accurate description of my job right now.
"I realize you think that teaching is my job, but there are many other aspects to being a professor. In the unlikely event that you are curious about what else a professor might have to do, here are a few of the issues that need my attention..."

It’s my birthday and instead of a typical busy Monday, I stayed home sick bc I woke up with a fever and body aches.

But the part that stings RN is getting no birthday text from my brother or dad, or choir pals who usually chime in 1st thing in the AM with birthday wishes.

😔

It’s OK but not.

This is 100% how my undergrads view it: LLMs should be used like giant fancy calculators and not a replacement for human ingenuity and judgment.
Still soul crushingly grim to me that the people who invented large language models’ first thought wasn’t “we can use this to get people to do less grueling paperwork” or “we can effectively automate taxes” but instead “finally, something that will crush, dehumanize and factory farm all art.”

Only been home for 7 hours and we’re already plotting another trip to Hawaii over Christmas break when airfares to Kaua’i are super reasonable.

There’s something magical about those islands. Sure, they’re not perfect, but they’re about as close as you can get in 2024.

Waiting to board for the flight home and dreading having to jump right into the work week, but looking forward to being reunited with our doggos and the comforts of home.

Also very happy that I sprang for a (relatively) cheap first class upgrade for the longer flight. Nice finish to our honeymoon!

TFW the tattoo artist charges you less than their usual rates because you’re an easy client who loves their work and lets them do their design with minimal constraints. And makes multiple Insta reels because the work is portfolio-worthy. 😁

Sitting in the waiting room of a tattoo studio for my appointment. The artist’s English is so-so but his work is spectacular (award-winning) and I trust that he’s got a great design worked up.

Had an extravagant dinner at Senia in Honolulu because honeymoon. It involved fresh black truffle and fancy Hawaiian venison and this nice gin drink called a 007.

Unlike most fine dining, I’m stuffed - we didn’t even get dessert, although the yuzu tart looked very tempting.

We have two berried shrimps! This one’s a blue velvet and the other is a green jade, we have a “skittles” tank so the offspring could be any kind of shrimp mudbloods. There’s gonna be soooo many shrimplings!

I write with @juliaangwin.com about our study that showed 50% of AI models’ responses to questions voters might ask were inaccurate.

Government must hold companies accountable, including through the privacy law called for by POTUS in his powerful #SOTU speech.

In our study, we found many AI chatbots and apps such as ChatGPT and Gemini provide misinformation on when and where to vote. Tech companies should improve their platforms.

I recently made a comic complaining that NASA refuses to listen to my good ideas for improving the Solar System (xkcd.com/2750).

To my delight, NASA’s Science Mission Directorate has sent me an actual expert panel evaluation of my “flatten the planets” proposal! Sadly, they decided not to fund it.

Went to a discussion session for a faculty reading circle on general education yesterday and for an hour, I got to feel like an intellectual again. Taking time to read and think about what I read felt self-indulgent and nostalgic.

It’s nice to have that moment but sad that it’s so rare of late.
