First, I am a vegan. I obviously don't think vegan diets are unhealthy. Second, paleolithic people also had horrible teeth. Everyone had horrible teeth until flouride was discovered in the late 19th Century. If you made it to 35 with a full set of teeth you basically won the lottery.

The classic Goebbels approach. In the period 1934-38, Germans were subjected to relentless stories about grotesque crimes committed by Jews, Poles and gypsies, all part of a carefully orchestrated campaign of demonization. And in 2025, Jonathan Greenblatt and the ADL approve of this message.
Fox & Friends and Pam Bondi are now sensationalizing specific instances of Somalis being charged with crimes in Minnesota to demonize the whole population

when I met with the exam chair to complain, he said “well you should have thought about that before taking so many physics classes“ like I had somehow fucked up by learning more quantum physics

Whenever people are like “physics culture is toxic” and “astronomy culture is good” I think about how other physicists are just more honest about their toxicity than astrophysicists who yes are physicists, sorry guys

As the only student who had taken several core grad courses in both departments, I knew for a fact that actually the astronomy classes were just easy and the physics students were more used to being challenged than the astro students were. I told him the physics students had better training. Lol

The astro dept chair responded by sending an email to the entire astro grad population telling them that they should be able to handle it because they had gone to ivy leagues for college and the physics students all went to second tier public schools

!!!

I wrote to him, objecting

Related: one of the two classes the departments shared was general relativity. The year my class took it, I had already had it, but the physics students were like “this is an easy breath of fresh air” and the astro students were so upset the petitioned the chair to tell the prof to make it easier

The astronomy grad classes were like 100x easier than the physics grad classes but the astronomy dept still looked down on the physics dept because they drew their students from a more prestigious admissions pool 🤡

I figured out the department was trying to sabotage me and asked my physics profs to write questions for me but then the exam was like

Astro question: thing the physics classes considered to be super basic

Physics question: derive hard quantum field theory thing

Easy choice lol

Thinking about the time my astro PhD program tried to fail me on my comp by not asking my physics profs for questions for me because they didn’t like that I had taken physics courses and then I passed by answering questions from astro electives I hadn’t taken because they were ridiculously easy

A huge part of how erratic and disjointed they all are is that they’re all constantly rotating through a nonstop list of untested, unverified drugs and supplements of dubious origin and unknown effect. It boggles my mind that this isn’t mentioned in every single story about them.
