My conference paper "Imaginary Friend or Foe? Examining the Pitfalls of an AI Writing Partner" is finally published in the CEA Critic! In it, I tackle some of the problematic assumptions about AI and discuss why LLMs may be counterproductive for writing pedagogy. muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl...
I’ve looked several times for a way to turn off Adobe’s AI pushiness and am so glad there finally is one.
Let’s keep putting the pressure on tech companies and making it clear we don’t want these features.
Feeling annoyed at the cognitive cost of having to dismiss all the offers of "AI" assitance every time I use Acrobat to provide feedback on documents my students wrote. (NO I do NOT want an "AI" summary of this. In what world???)

Decided to check settings:

We can't vote Schumer out until 2028 but we can make him being the senate majority leader a litmus test for 2026 candidates. Every single Dem senate candidate should be forced to go on the record and state they will not vote for him as majority leader.

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Another person who started down this path from the most “innocuous” advertised uses of ChatGPT: homework help. I have been struck by the cases of people getting lost in delusions after using this product for work or school: ie the use cases we are supposed to encourage as faculty.

the Teen Vogue politics section's last newsy story 🥲 Rainesford knocked it out of the park
It feels a bit weird to post right now in light of what has happened to @teenvogue.com and so much of the incredible team there. What sources shared here is important, & I’m grateful I got to work on this. I reported on how young people are being impacted by delays to SNAP: “It’s about survival.”

I think about the Times now the way one might think about an ex: “Ugh, I can’t believe I used to like you.”
The New York Times quickly sending out Douthat to argue that Mamdani’s victory doesn’t really matter is so predictable it borders on self-parody.

Remember, folks: Every time the Right wins an election, it’s an undeniable expression of the will of the people. If a lefty wins, it’s just a blip.

Mariah Carey getting cancelled over a really tone-deaf christmas commercial for Sephora that mocks the working class was not on my 2025 bingo card.

Games like Spiritfarer and Stardew Valley demonstrate class consciousness because their designers understand that the desire for “cozy games” stems from the spirit-crushing grind of late-stage capitalism. In this paper, I will…

I suspect some relatives (knowing my research & stance on GenAI) are trying to troll me by sending me AI slop videos. Then they’re disappointed when I call it out as AI. But like…was I supposed to find this fake video of animals being frightened by Halloween decorations amusing?

NASA responds:

"Yes, we've been to the Moon before ... six times"

Aw, shucks...Thanks, @miles-hentrup.bsky.social!
Last night's panel on AI in the humanities demonstrated that many students are deeply disturbed by the AI invasion of higher ed. I'm proud to have helped create this space for them to share their concerns and hope administrators will start listening.
I'd like to acknowledge the important work being done by my colleague (and bff), @amdieppa.bsky.social. When our university is offering nothing but vague AI boosterism, Allison is organizing the difficult conversations we all need to be having about the risks of incorporating LLMs into higher ed. /1

I love this model — I wonder if I could turn this into a survey where students can pinpoint themselves.
I have been mulling over the reductive post from days ago that could only imagine "Aware + Embraces" or "Ignorant + Refuses" as the two stances in debate about AI. If we need a simple model, here's a suggestion for Axes of AI including where I self-report for transparency. [1/3]

Canvas is down, and I am sympathetic to panicking students everywhere today, but I've had to send several e-mails in the last hour reminding my students that their physical textbook still works just fine.

I really wish I was better at calmly calling people out when they say inappropriate things to my face. Instead, I will walk away (flight) and then fixate on all the things I wish I’d said for the next 24-48 hours.
