An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

I am not a lawyer, just a historian, but one fundamental problem with the political debate about the EU, especially in English publications is that the whole principle of the acquis communnitaire is not understood or taken seriously. The EU is a framework of rules, not an alliance.

“Why are traumatized people so MISERABLE?”

“Too much disappointment teaches the system that ‘wanting leads to pain,’ and so it stops responding to potential rewards. … Biologically, it’s an adaptive silencing of the very circuits that make us feel alive.” www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/an-i...
How Chronic Disappointment Rewires the Brain
Chronic disappointment can train the brain to expect pain instead of reward. Restoring hope means reawakening dopamine through small actions, enriched environments, and new desire.

The tragic remains of the Huly Hill Stone Circle, at Newbridge, West of Edinburgh. A manicured mound and less than a handful of stones, next to two motorways, separated from the huge outlier on the east side of the junction. There are other stones and marked rocks nearby. #StandingStoneSunday

I think this is accurate and I'd expand it further to include the majority of wealthy Americans. Which tend to also be Conservatives. They don't have to be an actual adult until years past the rest of us and they resent that it ever happens.
I think Cory Doctorow really put it best

Conservatives think everything in the past was different from what is really was because they are remembering it from the viewpoint of childhood naïveté

A nice observational piece, showing what I learn is a ‘Ferguson Potato Spinner’ in action. Part of a suite of potato machines (mum took turns on this sort of work in the ‘60s - generally women’s labour then), i guess this shows how partial mechanisation was. #Skystorians #TractorCommentary

‘A couple of Tartan queers’ is how the Daily Record described the Two Roberts in 1977. It’s a vile piece: homophobic yet unable to deny their brilliance. This attitude is exactly why they fled to Soho from ‘Puritan Scotland’. I wanted to celebrate their love and talent so wrote The Two Roberts.

I do think that a lot, particularly as I relisten to my two audiobooks on Anglo Saxon history... So many of the people who lord it over of us are basically in place because their distant ancestors were better bullies than those around them. It doesn't seem much of a qualification.

gonna haring post for a bit cause i wrote my senior thesis on him

haring is mostly known for publicly consumable art - murals, subway graffiti, easily affordable stuff at pop shop locations. the art was all about public consumption, with very few exceptions, up until he receives his AIDS diagnosis.
“Why can’t Keith Haring just be memorialized as an American artist, instead of a gay one?”

HMM NATE MAYBE BECAUSE AMERICA LEFT HIM TO DIE DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE WAS GAY
Okay, now I somehow hate Nate Silver even more than I did before
