The second richest man on earth is about to be a major owner of TikTok.

The third richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The fourth richest man owns The Washington Post.

“Highly paid insiders at the NIH.”
😂😂😂
MAGA people sometimes show their whole asses.

Senior NIH scientists could get a job paying 2x or more in the private sector. But they accept lower pay, and give up ability to start/advise companies, because they believe in America.

Project 2025:

“Funding for scientific research should not be controlled by a small group of highly paid and unaccountable insiders at the NIH, many of whom stay in power
for decades. The NIH monopoly on directing research should be broken.“

In case you were wondering why this is happening.

They are arresting people on the streets, terminating their visas, and disappearing them for writing things they disagree with. This is where we are. Two months in. Right now. If you think they won’t begin coming after citizens soon, you are mistaken.

👇👇 Any Senators or members of Congress willing to “go to the NIH campus in Bethesda and follow the doge kids around?”
This was nice but it won't drive news. @smith.senate.gov @baldwin.senate.gov etc should have gone to the NIH campus in Bethesda and followed the DOGE goons around
Roundtable this Wed at the US Senate, on how Trump and Musk are killing research like cancer and Alzheimer’s research.

2:30pm Eastern. There is a livestream.

This would be better in primetime and produced for TV, like the Jan 6 Committee did.
But it’s a good start from @baldwin.senate.gov.

Somehow the following two things are true:

- most actual scientists cannot read my work for free, and there are strict rules about when/whether I’m allowed to send a copy of my work to an interested fellow scientist
- Mark Zuckerberg can just steal it and use it to train his AI tools for profit.

The reasoning is bullshit.

The true reasoning is “We, Trump/MAGA political strategists, have determined that the most politically palatable university to attack first is Columbia, and we want other universities and the public to stay quiet while we do this.”

They’re coming for you next.

This is terrifying.
Yes. If DHS can barge in, say your visa was revoked, be told you have a green card, say it's revoked too, and then disappear you so that neither your lawyer nor your family can find you, then all the guardrails are gone. There is no policy, practice, or law protecting anyone.

Yes. Journalists should note this:
Every science or tech student, age 5-35 today, is looking at the destruction of their career prospects due to Trump and Musk.

We should be interviewing those students and talking about the impact to their lives.
Every one of my friends is asking “do I even have a career going forward”
“Our next generation of researchers are now poised on the edge of this cliff, not knowing if there’s going to be a bridge that’s going to get them to the other side, or if this is it”

Musk and Trump are blowing up science careers for every STEM student.

Columbia called the cops on students— *like trump wanted*— & this is how Trump responds.

One should never comply with evil, but if even your complicity with evil will not save you— & it will not— then why comply?

Do not comply; not in advance, not at all. Fight for the right thing, no matter what.

I have this exact question about a recently-submitted grant that should have been reviewed by an IC-specific panel…
Another question is what happens to the applications that have already been submitted in response to funding announcements that were to have been reviewed in the institute review branches. Will a new review system be set up in a timely fashion or will these programs be abandoned for this year?

It’s almost like it’s a bad thing when private equity owns our health care. 🙄
ICYMI: House Health Committee Chair Dan Frankel (D., Allegheny) is vowing action after a private equity backed medical firm announced plans to close two remaining Crozer hospitals in suburban Philadelphia.

Our health care system is the worst.
Health care is so expensive that 31 million U.S. adults, or 12%, had to borrow a total of $74 billion last year to obtain medical care, new data shows. That includes people with health insurance, making such numbers even more troubling.

Americans borrowed $74 billion last year to cover their health care costs
For millions of Americans, paying for medical care often means going into debt, new data shows.

Dear scientists at US universities: Trump/Musk continue to freeze your grants. NIH is not reviewing grants nor funding them in council. This is a backhanded, legal method to effectively stop NIH grants.

See thread and linked article.

Are we going to “keep our heads down” about this?
This is a five-alarm fire 🔥 for US science 🧪.
(We keep saying that, but it keeps being true 😭.)

Trump and Musk are blocking *ALL* NIH grants ‼️ by "exploiting a loophole in the process"—stopping study sections & council meetings.

Every biomedical researcher in the country should be screaming. 1/
NEW: The Trump administration is exploiting a loophole to keep funding frozen at the NIH - a move that some legal scholars say is illegal.

Federal Register notices are blocked, so no grant-review sessions can be scheduled.

Now Trump and Musk laid off the negotiators.
