Thank you @cmbrookepinto.bsky.social for leading the charge on funding semi-open primaries, so that independents can finally be included in DC's most important elections!!

Thanks to @cmbrookepinto.bsky.social for this amendment! We need to fully implement I-83, as supported by a huge majority of DC voters last fall
Also interesting: Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto is proposing an amendment to fund semi-open primaries in D.C., which was one half of Initiative 83. The other half, ranked-choice voting, is being funded separately. If this passes, D.C. would get RCV and semi-open primaries in 2026.
Interesting: An amendment from Ward 7 Councilmember Wendell Felder and At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds that would have delayed ranked-choice voting (by requiring a feasibility study first) has been withdrawn. So for now it looks like RCV will come to D.C. elections in 2026.

What a shame that the amendment @cmbrookepinto.bsky.social just offered to implement the semi-open primaries component of Initiative 83 did not pass. 73% of voters made their will known. Shame on those who voted no! #letindependentsvote #YESon83

On July 14, the Council voted to fund ranked choice voting. 🎉 We're halfway there. The DC Council must fully fund Initiative 83. Semi-open primaries will let DC's 84,000 independents vote in our taxpayer-funded primaries. Write or call your CMs this week. Demand their YES vote on July 28. #YESon83

This was me, a little over a year ago, dressed in suffragette white, wearing a sandwich board stating: I CANNOT VOTE TODAY ASK ME WHY. As a registered unaffiliated (independent) voter, I'm barred from voting in DC's taxpayer-funded primary elections. 73% of voters here want to change that. 1/2

Without full implementation of i83, the 18% of DC voters that are unaffiliated to any party will remain locked out of participation in primary elections that their taxes pay for.

Opinion: Respect the will of voters, fund semi-open primaries
The D.C. Council has voted to fund one part of Initiative 83. But another crucial aspect of the law is still in limbo.

We've seen a lot of buzz around the controversial results of the Ward 8 Special Election. We just clinched Ranked Choice Voting for DC elections starting next June, but how could it have helped in this week's election? We break it down here!

These 8 DC Councilmembers voted to fund the Ranked Choice Voting portion of Initiative 83! Here's a snippet of what they had to say about it

Please thank these CMs for their support, and encourage them to also fund semi-open primaries which would allow independents to vote in DC primary elections!

For those keeping track, the cost to implement DC's landslide-winning Initiative 83 is $1.3 million over 4 years, yet the Council Chair and Mayor say there may not be funds available. But ... they've found $1.5 million for a riser.

Things that make you go ... hmmm. 🤔

The rising cost comes at a time when many city Dems don't even plan to attend Trump II.
