When I started to do advanced data analysis on Google Sheets 2 years ago, I got a lot of "just use ChatGPT" from friends. And I always replied with "no, thanks" bc I really wanted to learn and be good at it instead of simply getting the job done.
Out of curiosity, I tried to use ChatGPT to make R code a few times.
Once it worked great, solving the problem with more elegant code than I’d have used.
Twice it worked fine, clunky but it got there.
Twice it generated cuckoo-bananapants nonsense- but I’d only know that if I knew how to code.

But now, when I hear "well, I use chatgpt because I can code in R / analyse my data / do literature review again", my answer is systematically: no, you cannot.
I think the loss of technical skills is dangerous for research, because it prevents a sound understanding of feasibility.

I've never traveled out of SEA and so never experienced applying for a visa. Anyway, I'm attending a workshop outside of SEA later this month, and I had so much stress going through the visa application process. It even disrupted my sleep! 😭🫠

As a primatologist, Jane Goodall was a huge inspiration to me. I admired the way she describes chimpanzee behavior with such detail and empathy, and she’s inspired so many people and advocated for chimpanzee conservation and welfare.
However, I'm dismayed at what her narrative leaves out (1/10)
