My grandfather died peacefully at home last night, surrounded by family and with anticipatory medicines in place.

I advised my family to discuss #AdvanceCarePlanning last year. It paid off, and a distressing rush to hospital, which he didn't want, was avoided.

Difficult conversation worth having.

Question for #runsky. Doing #CouchTo5K and having some knee pain on same side as ankle I broke 20 years ago, suspect some stability issues. How important are running shoes? I'm 6'5" and 100kg, are there any good shoes that won't break the bank for a newbie? #running #physio

I’ve long used FiveThirtyEight’s interactive “Hack Your Way To Scientific Glory” to illustrate the idea of p-hacking when I teach statistics. But ABC/Disney killed the site earlier this month :(

This is truly one of the great scandals with NHS drug funding.

Your average "NHS refuses to fund.." headline is for a stupidly over priced drug with a disappointing benefit.

This is a relatively cheap drug with a substantial improvement. 672 deaths. 2 jumbo jets worth of deaths.

I listened to the CEO of Anthropic (big AI firm) on BBC R4 this morning saying we're all in the same boat when it comes to automation and AI replacing workers. Except we're not, are we? The wealthy will do just fine, it's the rest of society that will be forced to adapt.

It’s an open secret among medical professionals: Many drugs maintain their ability to combat ailments well after their expiration date. One pharmacist says he sometimes takes home expired OTC medicine so he and his family can use it.

(Published 2017, but there's no expiration date for this story)
The Myth of Drug Expiration Dates
Hospitals and pharmacies are required to toss expired drugs, no matter how expensive or vital. Meanwhile the FDA has long known that many remain safe and potent for years longer.
