1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

Which work? Calling for gay people to be stoned to death? Blaming airplane crashes on black pilots? Anti-vax bullshit? Election denialism? Pushing Great Replacement Theory?

Kirk’s murder is awful and ominous for this country. But no, we don’t need to honor him or “continue his work.”

Public sand batteries could give the state new powers to set the wholesale clearing price for electricity.
Sand batteries are literally just silos of sand that retain heat exceptionally well -- so well that they can be tied to heat exchange systems to serve as proxy *electrical* batteries. Finland's new model can store enough power (100 MWh) to heat an entire town for a week.

The world's largest sand battery just went live in Finland
Finland has inaugurated an industrial-scale sand battery this week in the southern town of Pornainen, where it'll take over heating duties from an old woodchip power plant for the municipality. It's s...

Analysis: The US government has declared war on the very idea of climate change | CNN Politics
Americans are used to whiplash in their climate policy. The US has been in and out and in and out again of the key Paris climate agreement over the past four presidencies.

It's very obvious that the NYT has put people in editorial positions who view it as part of their job to upset the left. This is, in the bizarro, insular world of US elites, seen as a way to restore balance & regain the trust of the right.

Putting aside the merits of the larger effort ...

It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.

In a move that raises very serious First Amendment issues, ICE executed a major splashy operation in California aiming to arrest a guy for posting fliers with names, pictures, and apparent phone numbers for ICE HSI agents.

I am struggling to think what possible law posting that info could violate.

It’s also how Musk himself is trying to spin things to Tesla shareholders. There is no reason to parrot this announcement uncritically.
I don't know anything about this specific reporter, but the function of Politico seems to me to be to launder right wing talking points.

So no, I don't believe Musk is actually stepping down in a real way. I just think that's what Rs want us to believe.
(Politico) - President Donald Trump has told his inner circle, including members of his Cabinet, that Elon Musk will be stepping back in the coming weeks from his current role as governing partner, ubiquitous cheerleader and Washington hatchet man.

WOW: @miamiherald.com reveals that a person imprisoned in El Salvador had LEGAL REFUGEE STATUS.

He entered the USA legally in January and was detained because of his tattoos, EVEN THOUGH he had previously passed a full background check.

Without warning, he was sent to El Salvador on March 15.

Critical: "deportation" does not apply here. It's abduction and trafficking.
Here is what's critical to understand about El Salvador's prisons: Since 2022, Bukele invoked emergency power and detained 87,000 people without warrants. Prison population went from 40K to 120K with majority having never stood trial.
Based on this fast and excellent WaPo reporting, these four guys are not gang members, just Venezuelan dads who came to the US to work. They’re now being paraded in shackles in El Salvador www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...
