If you’re not from Manitoba, you may not have ever seen one of these before. This is a bombardier. Designed in 1937 in Quebec, these were originally used as rural ambulances and school buses. Adopted by commercial fisherman in Manitoba’s Interlake, you still see them regularly in winter. 1/2
A large machine that looks like a cross between a VW beetle, a snowmobile and a tank sits in the snow along the edge of an enormous frozen lake. This particular machine is painted white and has two large auger’s off the back near the treads. The windows look like port holes along the side and there’s a rack on its rounded roof for carrying extra gear. It’s a cloudy day and the white paint job blends into the snow. Beside you of a machine that looks like a cross between a VW beetle, a snowmobile, and a tank sits in the middle of a giant frozen lake. It’s painted bright yellow, and has the smokestack of a woodstove coming out from the middle of the roof. Four port hole windows line the side, and there is a passenger side door in the front. Where the front wheels should be our skis and the back is powered by a four wheel tractor tread.

Yes. I do not love the attitude that finding sparks of hope and joy is somehow naive. As someone who was diagnosed with a chronic illness at a young age and has been involved in activism most of my life I can tell you that seeking out happiness is not a luxury, it’s an essential survival skill*.

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.
