The mood was "chaos" at US airines when the FAA announced with little notice that it would cut flights by 10% at 40 key airports.

But once they had the where and by how much, staff used muscle memory developed during COVID to methodically thin schedules.

My latest for @fastcompany.com.

Even with a deal to end the shutdown on the horizon, no one's breathing easy yet.

House Dems' caucus call today was full of anger, three sources tell @axios.com

Stansbury: "People are f**king pissed."

Jayapal said Schumer either "can't control his caucus" or he "gave his blessing to the deal."

Susie Lee pushed back.

This as well. Thinner air up higher = less fuel burn to preserve the ideal air : fuel ratio.
Fuel burn is horrendous that low too...

There's a non-zero safety risk with something like this.

1. Lower tends to be bumpier. 8k is *maybe* fine, but you can also get the kinds of bumps that smack unbelted people's heads into the ceiling.

2. Altitude = options. The higher you are, the more time you have to troubleshoot in an emergency.
Things are fine.

Nine c-level U.S. airline executives and senior officials told @jonostrower.com and I how the industry is really feeling about the 10% flight cuts — and why they’re skeptical of the FAA’s safety justification.

I don't think enough people understand how much we're living in an AI-enabled panopticon now.

This is...certainly one way to do it!
LGA Terminal B sent an email last night to its tenant airlines (United, Air Canada, JetBlue, Southwest, etc) that basically says "hey if you know wtf is going on, let us know?"

Meetings between airlines and FAA didn't happen until *last night* for operational impacts starting *Friday*. Unreal.
