Elyan couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled out of him, and they were both whooping and laughing as the wagon rolled on. They’d done it. They’d fucking done it! Askha and [other horse] were prancing as they picked up the humans’ mood, setting the wagon rocking. Rathaliel clutched at the side but even the thought of being flung out of the wagon at top speed wasn’t going to dent Elyan's mood. On second thought, a fall at this speed could leave him with more broken bones. He shuddered.

“Well, no point in being subtle, is there?” The slil’vyr stepped forward and raised its arms. Veins glowed hot under its dry skin as the rocky roof of the layer trembled and meteors rained down, lighting up the complex of caverns and the multitude of beady, black eyes that stalked them. The first meteor crashed and broke into a myriad of flaming shards that set the webs on fire. Then the second, the third, each exploding into a shower of devastation. Ashrah allowed herself a moment to bask in the shrieks that echoed throughout the caves, then drew Yjadzal and pointed it forward, the glowing tip of the sword a mere flicker in the infernal tempest.

“I’m Lightofel,” he said. “You can call me Light. If that makes it easier.” “That’s a nice name,” she said without thinking. “So’s yours.” A little laugh bubbled up out of her chest, and she glanced away at the view of the city outside the balcony. “I’ve always hated it.” “Why?” “Because it’s not a label, it’s an order. Remember. Verbs shouldn’t be names; it only gets confusing. And I never had any say in ‘Mem,’ that was just how everyone naturally decided to shorten it. Mem sounds like a baby trying to speak its first word.” Light let out a laugh at that—full and rich from his belly, with no condescension or falseness. He wasn’t just trying to humor her; he’d genuinely found her comment funny. Mem wasn’t used to people finding her funny. Her stomach fluttered with happy surprise, and an automatic smile rushed to her face. She wondered if she’d be lucky enough to make him laugh a second time. “I think it’s c—” he began, then hesitated. “Don’t say cute, I beg you,” she said, laughing herself. “It’s a—a friendly name,” he corrected himself. “Oh, wonderful. Just what every girl wants. To be thought friendly.”

Tok could feel it, he knew that she wanted more – he needed her to want more. His heartbeat drummed faster now, and his skin turned tight. The carnal passion had fully overtaken him, and he wanted to bath further in her lust. “Not yet – more.” His powerful arms collapsed down around her, and his hand gripped his lady’s dress. With effort and a grunt, he tore the fabric apart. Otalia’s eyebrows raised and her breathing hastened; Tok was certain he could feel the skin along her back prickle. There was nothing between them now, the tatters of her clothes discarded to the side, he made his move. Eagerly, and foolishly, he prodded a bit – clumsily to be sure, but she did not allow him to leave her wanting for long. Otalia effortlessly readjusted to his lap and directed his path just as the True Mother would, right into her warm embrace, right into her divinity. Tok buried himself over and over within her and laid ravenous lips upon her throat and shoulders. One hand rested at the nape of his neck, stroking it tenderly, the other gripped at his back to hold him close. Otalia match his rhythm rising and falling, rolling her hips to take all that she could stand. This was their passion made manifest; this was the feeling that had been planted within him when they agreed to one another. For a moment, but for eternity too, there was nothing else. The tension, the stress, it was as if they were locked in a struggle. The delight, the gratification, it was as if he was being cradled by a dream. Tok could hold on no longer, he was weak – but never had he preferred weakness so much. Like a lioness over a fresh kill, Otalia hovered above him savoring the final flavor of her meal before – and with verbal approval she allowed her soul to quake. Tok found himself spent, fully and completely. It was his lady’s kisses that would revitalize him and in turn he would pour back into her. With only the light of the twin moons to illuminate their bodies, the pair basked in their afterglow.

From Book 1 of my #Atlantis trilogy.
Though Mireia could see nothing beyond the small sphere of red light cast by her beacon, she sensed the space around her opening up more and more. Soon she felt sure she was walking through a vast cavernous chamber, pitch black except for her own little island of light. The echoes of her footsteps had become round and hollow, spreading wide and far, hinting at just how massive the empty space around her was. She suddenly felt like a lone deer caught in an open field. A single tree on a flat plane in the middle of a lightning storm. A small fishing boat lost at sea on a black moonless night. “Keep moving forward,” she whispered, voice trembling. What kinds of things might live in this Labyrinth? Did the priests and priestesses of the Citadel even know what was in these rooms? Suppose there was some unspeakable creature who had taken up residence in here? Suppose it was watching her now, this foolish human prey wandering right into its lair, and at any moment it would spring upon her and drag her off? She would be lucky if all it did was kill her.

The shapes she had seen from afar enlarged into a tower capped by a brass sphere that overlooked a building made of rocks the colour of the sand. Hairy, pink flowers clung to the walls as if sprouting from the rocks themselves, their vines spreading like green veins around the construction. Balconies protruded from the facade, brown curtains undulating outside. Ashrah stood on tiptoes but could see nothing beyond the faded amber of the ceiling. What do you sense? “Three dĩn'huei, then two more farther away,” Datusha replied. “Whatever device Ikalry sent us to destroy, it’s definitely in there. Its magical field is making me itch all over.” Do any of your astral remnants retain the capacity to itch? “It was just… let’s leave the studies for later, shall we?”

I wasn't looking for trouble, but she found me anyway, wearing a smile you couldn't trust and hips that didn't lie… unless, of course, they were plotting against me. The rest of her sat down at my desk and pushed a case folder through the shifting takeaway menus. I tried to read her eyes–meadowy green, blooming with wildflowers of annoyance–to decipher what she wanted. “What I want,” she growled, “ is for you to take the Redstone case seriously.” She was an enigmatic broad, my assistant. Sometimes it felt as if Kayleigh could read my very thoughts. Her eyes narrowed further. “It’s cos you're mumbling to yourself again, you idiot. And for the last time, I'm not your assistant!” Uncanny. Pam was right about this dame. She always said Kay deserved a nameplate on the office door too. But my colleagues give themselves too much credit. This is my outfit, after all. With a brain like a sponge and a mind like a steel trap, I've enjoyed great victories in thinking wars, and I've dominated entire battlefields of focus and attention. In fact, just the other day, I saw this marvellous beetle– Kay slammed a fist on the folder. “The Redstone case, Sam!”

Once back to her senses, she shut the Stopover’s backdoor and went to work disposing of Castle’s remains. First, she rummaged through his pockets for money and found a decent stash that would afford her a night’s rest in an actual bed. That done, she dragged his corpse into the middle of the field and buried him under the snow. Ghoulish work, and she did not envy the poor soul who would find the body once the land thawed, but short of digging into the frozen ground underneath, she wasn’t sure what else to do with him.

Unarmed and facing an enemy that had clearly lost their minds, Tokonus wished that he had his bracers. Although it would still be painful to get his by the sword, it was unlikely to cause him more than a few lumps. Esthan wasn’t interested in being patient, he lunged rapidly at Tokonus forcing the lord to avoid the sudden strike. His movements were swift, but sluggish and it was as if he had chains weighing him down. A quick feint and then the blade was brought high above the noble's head, but a fluid dodge made the attack useless – Tokonus eyes popped open wide as the sword crashed into the ground crumbling pieces of the stone floor.

You cannot possibly believe that is better than what I am proposing.” “Your concern for my well-being is touching, but I’ll survive.” Ashrah looked away, tapping her foot, then glanced at Nitara before just as quickly averting her gaze once more. Finally, she let her arms drop. “Fine! I will freely give you my blood.” Nitara’s eyes widened in surprise, then narrowed as she stared at the demon with the full force of her suspicion. “And why in the cursed Hells would you do that?” “Because I do not wish to watch you languishing as the Abyss consumes you. I have staked a claim to your soul, and thus, only I may kill you.” “Your moral compass is astonishing.” “I do not possess this artefact you speak of.” “Oh, I’m well aware of that.” Her head hung low. “All right.” With a heavy sigh, Nitara stood, every muscle in her body screaming in agony. “And just to be clear, no part of me, let alone my soul, belongs to you in any way.”

“Well?” she said. “Or are you waiting for me to make the first move?” “Hey, you know, if I’m not measuring up to your standards, we could always—” She sprang at him again. It was frightening how she could snap from perfectly still to lunging motion in the blink of an eye. The sickles aimed for his neck, but Krutch simply fell backward. He landed flat on his back, knocking the wind out of him, and his head hit the concrete. But he again avoided Camilla’s attack and heard her growl with frustration as she flew past him. Knowing there would be a follow-up, he rolled over and used the momentum to push himself back to his feet. He nearly lost his balance again and barely dodged the slash meant for his belly. He then overturned and fell into an almost cartwheel with his hands on the ground and leg kicking outward. Practically upside down, he didn’t see Camilla, but heard her confused grunt just as he felt something clip his heel. When he oriented himself, he found her standing three paces away and rubbing her jaw with shock and outrage in her eyes. He’d either offended her, or she realized what she was actually dealing with. Probably both. He really needed his gun.

They would get a fair investigation and trial, if they came quietly. It wasn’t precisely the order of events favored by the more mundane authorities, but the nature of the predators that we dealt with demanded that society be made safe, before much time was spent investigating. It was all laid out very clearly in the Pactus Ubarae. I had read the whole thing once, a requirement of the job. Dry as week-old toast, but very clear; quite the accomplishment for a centuries old legal document. I swung open the door and my boss, James Herron, rose to greet me. “Rayna.” He clapped me on the shoulder, looking me over carefully, eyes lingering on the scratch marks on my neck. I preferred Ray, but I usually let my mentor get away with it. I rubbed my hand over the bloody lines across my neck. “Club girls with manicures.” I shrugged. “They should have to register those nails as weapons.” “Well, I hope you disinfected. That can breed a nasty infection.” He stepped back around the other side of his desk and consulted the case file. “Looks like you had a productive night.” “I try my best.”

Lizcy breathed a wall of fire between her and Sareena before whipping around to face her prime enemy. Ashrah parried the dagger, then, seeing the whip coming from above, made to dodge to the right. The whip snapped as Lizcy changed its direction to catch Ashrah across the chest. But Ashrah had expected this exact manoeuvre and ducked under the spiked ribbon to slash the balor’s leg. “I studied you,” she said to a glaring Lizcy, so used to being the best in combat. But she had never fought Ashrah, had only vowed to kill her, only mocked her status, and in all those thousands of Pulses, she had made her gravest mistake: taking Ashrah for a submissive slave. “I see how your pride makes you predictable. Weaker.” She flicked the balor’s blood out of her shining blade. “Come, balor. Give me the fight you have been promising me for so long. Show me the depths of your fury and the reaches of your scorn. Grant me this, and after I kill you, I shall remember you as a worthy opponent.”

“You look ill,” Othelia observed glaring down at the young lord. “What has happened to you? You were in good health when we allowed you passage home.” Tokonus had not been the only one to notice that something was wrong with [redacted]. His appearance wasn’t the only thing off; there was a sound to his voice that the Lukshen could hear as well. A slight delay or echo that Tokonus was sure that no one else would hear. “No – no I can’t...,” [redacted] mumbled addressing the air above his shoulder. After a muted back and forth, the sickly man turned back to the lord and lady shivering. “Just... just help me. I – I have information. I can... I can help you too, so please, I beg you to help me.” He had avoided the question and Tokonus’ eyes turned toward Othelia. For a moment she allowed her emotional mask to slip, and it was clear that she was uncomfortable as well. Whatever was wrong with [redacted], it was severe, and he would need treatment if they were to have a productive conversation. More importantly, they needed to consider that he might have been contagious. An unknown pathogen would be far worse than anything that [redacted] or Constance could ever do to them.
