My take on the US-EU trade deal in this @ecfr.eu policy alert:
- EU preferred an unequal deal rather than retaliating to maybe get a better one
- Some economic silver linings don't cancel the political capitulation
- EU needs credible retribution to prevent further US demands

I spoke yesterday with @deutschewellerss.newsmast.social.ap.brid.gy about Zelenskyy's visit to Greece: more gas supplies are crucial to compensate for Ukraine's lower production due to attacks by Russia. And defending Ukrainian infrastructure is equally important.

My take on incoming EU steel tariffs in this Deutsche Welle piece: the move aims at obtaining concessions form the US, most likely a tariff-free quota for European producers, but at the cost of worsening trade relations with other suppliers to the bloc

And people forget that despite all the anti-German sentiment the German car industry is a primary driver of (economic) integration, employment, and export growth for CEE MS. If it doesn't modernize with an eye to the marketplace of the 21stC it will be one giant multinational Nokia
If Germany doesn’t put in place a pro-competitive industrial policy for cars, centred on market building, the country may well end up down the line giving messy bailouts, regulatory rollbacks in response to mounting political and union pressure - only for the sector to wither anyway.
German auto summit tomorrow.

The sole focus on the EU combustion engine phase-out, which is 10 years away, is baffling because German cars have a demand problem today

Berlin worries a new EV subsidy scheme would be fiscally too expensive.

But demand-side support is a fiscal no-brainer here.

There's a fascinating case study to be done on the different strategies of Macron and Sánchez. Both emerged, against the odds, from centrist milieux in the mid-2010s to lead their countries since 2017/18. But their fates are totally different.

In Brazil, if you plot a coup to subvert the result of democratic elections, you end up in jail.
In the US, if you actually execute one, you end up in the White House.

My views of a no deal scenario in EU-US trade negotiations for @cnbc.com
- ACI does allows for flexibility in the response
- If no deal, EU would want swift and substantial retaliation
- ACI likely to be kept in reserve after retaliatory EU tariffs come into force

What Europe's response to a no-deal with Trump could look like
Uncertainty remains about if and when a trade agreement between the EU and U.S. could be struck.

The latest edition of the Rule of Law report shows the country made "no progress" in seven of the eight recommendations.
EU will keep €18 billion frozen for Hungary over rule of law concerns
The money currently frozen combines around €8.4 billion in cohesion funds and €9.5 billion in COVID-19 recovery funds. #EuropeNews
