An introduction for new folk, I guess

I play indie games, traditional roguelikes (DCSS, Angband, etc), board games, card games, tabletop RPGs

I have degrees in medieval history

I wrote unnecessarily verbose flavour text for a jam game once

Capitalism gives me the ick
I'm celebrating Thankstaking today. Any thanks that you give today will come to me.

Resumed playing Path of the Abyss after a few months away.

I've reached a point where I'm hitting dungeon crawl staples that I've heard of but never experienced myself, like spinners 😨

I have only one answer to this question:

BODY

I find it a bit baffling how many people choose to listen to things to fall asleep. Any noise keeps me awake. I need as close to silence as I can get.

This is Sektori! A twin-stick shooter I've been making (and documenting the journey) since April 2021. And it finally launched TODAY on Steam, PS5 and Xbox! Here's a fresh launch trailer, all shares highly appreciated. More game info in replies.

Decided to start up the relatively recently released Guns of Fury.

How could I resist a metroidvania done in the style of Metal Slug?

One of the reasons I generally like TinyAngband more than actual Angband is because its relative brevity (27 floors versus Angband's 100) means you start finding nice artefact gear a lot sooner and more often, which gives a greater sense of progress without a loooong, dull trudge at the beginning

Next finish is Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders

Overshadowed by Doom, which it mimics a lot, and its own successor Hexen, but actually pretty good in its own right. Consumables add something to the basic template, and the environments are prettier than Doom's bases

For #RandomGameSaturday I drew Prey - not the more recent 'immersive sim' one but the Xbox 360 FPS about being abducted by aliens and then fighting to escape.

It's a better game than it sounds like it would be, with some novel gameplay features going on.

This one's from me! I thought it'd be fun to poke and prod at the concepts of hard and hardcore games, and ultimately how unrelated the two terms are:

www.pcgamer.com/gaming-indus...
There's a difference between hard games and hardcore ones, and the distinction matters
True skill is about more than learning how to win, and true challenge is about more than an insurmountable obstacle.

This whole wishlist thing is only a small part of the picture even though we get obsessed by them.

The main thing is: is it appealing enough at launch to sell enough that the algorithm shows it around, streamers play it and friends tell friends.

One of the things that makes me laugh with fads in games is the excessively literal names

Courtesy of reading CRPG Addict I now know about this ridiculous tune from a 1993 Amiga CD game. The "shut up" bit in the middle is genuinely kind of funny 😂

So far I'd say Heretic isn't as good as Doom BUT it does have some more eye-pleasing environments than Doom's parade of space bases/hell forts

The horror of realising you're now as old as the guy who played Roger Stirling was in season 1 of Mad Men 😨

As someone who plays mostly indie games, not a single one of the TGA nominees would be my pick for any category 😅

"...Oh. Oh no."

My childhood favourite board game. Later editions weren't the same because Gary Chalk's art was such a large part of the vibe. Also, the City expansion was the ultimate form of the game.
