So far I'd say Heretic isn't as good as Doom BUT it does have some more eye-pleasing environments than Doom's parade of space bases/hell forts

Next finish: Heroes of the Monkey Tavern

A "blobber" (party dungeon crawl e.g. Grimrock) but unlike many in the genre it's pretty short at around 8 hours. A couple of annoying areas aside, it's pretty good. I find this genre hit and miss. This one is mostly hit.

*Reading a game description* "Oh this sounds pretty good--"

"...Oh. Oh no."

My childhood favourite board game. Later editions weren't the same because Gary Chalk's art was such a large part of the vibe. Also, the City expansion was the ultimate form of the game.

The new Boglands expansion for Halls of Torment is pretty good. There's some fun stuff in there.

Yet again: STOP "SEALING AWAY" REALLY DANGEROUS FANTASY VILLAINS. THEY ALWAYS GET OUT.

Today's #RandomGameSaturday gives us one of my personal favourite Zelda games - Link's Awakening.

This is probably my joint favourite alongside Majora's Mask. I think it's no coincidence that both of my favourites are slightly surreal and dreamlike.

Asura the Striker is a recent game but it gives us a very nostalgic arcade intro sound

I realise no one follows me for board game content (or indeed any content) but I've been feeling boardy lately, so here are my 5 most played games according to BGG

#1 isn't a surprise but #4 is - I don't feel like I've played it that much

The usual responses to being offered a quest...?

Okay, that's a bit much

A start of November skircle for the masses. I see @arcanalegacy.bsky.social has moved into the inner circle now. Most of the others are regulars

This was advertised at me on Instagram, and I am unconvinced

Played the demo of Asura the Striker (released earlier this year) and immediately bought it

For the first #RandomGameSaturday of November we draw... Fallout New Vegas

I've only played two Fallout games - this and 3. Personally I prefer 3 because I like how bare and deserted the Capital Wasteland is, but I get why people prefer this one

I haven't played all the Ys games by any stretch, but I'd rank the ones I've played like this:

VIII
X
IX
Seven
VI
I
Oath in Felghana
Origin
II

Next finish is Ys X: Nordics

I LOVED 8, and 9 was almost as good, so 10 had big shoes to fill. This comes closest to toppling 8, it's that good. You know how Black Flag was Assassin's Creed but pirates? Nordics is (modern) Ys but pirates. The whole seafaring aspect actually adds a lot. Great stuff

Being a fan of traditional roguelikes, I think it'd be nice to have a physical copy of the Epyx edition of Rogue...

...but not THAT nice

Next finish: Parasite Eve

Mixed feelings. Some parts I loved, but others were miserable. Overall liked it, and it's very cinematic even now, but it does have plenty of flaws, among them a tedious middle section which drags.

#RandomGameSatuday this week threw up a bit more Master System.

Sonic 2: Sonic Goes Hang Gliding is surprisingly difficult, but I have fond memories of it. It also has some music that continues to be reused/referenced to this day

My favourite bit of the Higurashi intro - "I'll take you away, along with that finger" 😂
