Today, the Government of Alberta has introduced Bill 9 which uses the notwithstanding clause to restrict the rights of Two-Spirit, trans & gender diverse people. This legislation is brought days ahead of Trans Day of Remembrance - a day meant to honour the lives lost to anti-trans violence.
Alberta uses Notwithstanding Clause to perpetuate unprecedented Attack on Trans Rights. Today, the Government of Alberta has introduced Bill 9 which uses the notwithstanding clause to restrict the rights of Two-Spirit, trans and gender diverse people in the province. This legislation is brought days ahead of Trans Day of Remembrance - a day meant to honour the lives lost to anti-trans violence. Doing so is not only cruel but a direct form of institutional violence against trans communities. This law reaches into nearly every part of a young person's life and restricts their access to health care, ability to learn, and right to participate in their communities. This is not theoretically of ideological - Behind every policy are real young people and families who's rights, sense of belonging, and very safety are being eroded by our very government.

I think it’s worth noting this piece generated the most unsubscribes I’ve seen in a while, and the newsletter version had the lowest open rate in many months. These horrors persist in part because too many people go to great pains to avoid them.

To our wonderful community! Today, on June 27, 2025, Egale Canada and Skipping Stone are thrilled to share that the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta has granted our injunction request to block the Government of Alberta’s denial of gender-affirming care for gender diverse young people in the province from coming into effect. This is an historic win, affirming that young people in Alberta and across Canada deserve to live authentically in safety and freedom. On the basis of expert evidence, the Court concluded that Bill 26 would cause irreparable harm to gender diverse young people in Alberta. The Court recognized that, in addition to other harms, barring medical care for gender diverse young people would “reinforce the discrimination and prejudice that they are already subjected to”. The Court further concluded, “The evidence shows that there is a benefit to the public in issuing the injunction because it will allow this marginalized group to continue receiving medical care from trusted doctors and a broader team of health professionals thereby avoiding the adverse consequences the ban will have on them, including interference with their autonomy, unwanted and permanent development, serious stress and anxiety and further discrimination, until the issues are decided on a full record at trial.” The Court continues to state in it’s decision that “the evidence shows that the Ban will cause irreparable harm by causing gender diverse youth to experience permanent changes to their body that do not align with their gender identity. There is nothing speculative about this evidence.” As we have long argued, the government should never interfere in the medical decisions of doctors and patients or prevent parents and youth from deciding what medical care is right for them. Everyone deserves the ability to access health care and participate fully in their communities. We are grateful that the Court has acted to protect access to critical medical care.

Alberta as we know it today simply would not exist without the millions of immigrants and refugees who built it, who loved it, and who were proud to call it home - including my grandparents and my mum. This bitter xenophobia is as unAlbertan as it’s possible to be. I’m ashamed. I’m disgusted.

A reminder-the children's Tylenol deal, which they claimed they had to make because of the mass spread of viral illness, was $70 million dollars.

Here, they are complaining about spending $21 million dollars on something that will actually keep people out of the hospital.

I have a question regarding the UCP government's policy change on COVID-19 vaccination eligibility. Why is my 50+ year old self now going to have to pay for COVID vaccinations when I and members of my family are at high risk? The GoA notice spoke of "significant waste reduction". One this thing government absolutely has no care about is fiscal responsibility, let alone the health of its constituents. Under "Quick Facts" the GoA post spoke of the FDA recommendations. The US FDA is currently under the control of an anti-vax nutcase, so quoting that public body alone is grounds for dismissal of the post's scientific validity and accuracy on public health policy. If this government was serious of the health of Albertans, it would make COVID vaccinations available to all Albertans who want them.
