Retired Army Sgt. Brian Wofford spoke to me this morning at the Oklahoma City #NoKings protest. Didn’t expect him to be carrying his DD214 so I asked some warmup questions like when he got out and whether his injury was service-related.

He paused while describing the car bomb in Iraq to say this:

It is pretty galling that the Supreme Court spent four years telling Biden "you can't do that without Congress" then allowed Trump to seize a once-unthinkable amount of power from Congress within nine months and concentrate law-making authority almost entirely in the executive branch.

International student arrivals to the US dropped 19% this year, the biggest drop on record aside from the 2020 pandemic low.
The decline is occurring as the Trump administration has delayed visa processing, instituted travel bans or restrictions for 19 countries, threatened to deport international students for pro-Palestinian speech, and heightened the vetting of student visa applicants.

Ah, RIP. A great scientist whose work on COBE revolutionized our understanding of the early Universe. That work won him a Nobel, and he donated the prize money.

George and I gave competing talks at the National Science Bowl one year. Needless to say, he drew a much bigger crowd!
R.I.P. George F. Smoot (1945-2025)

We will no doubt read many official obituaries in days to come, but all I can say is that he was a character, a very original thinker, a fine scientist, and a very nice man. Along with many others, I will miss him enormously.

2023—10.4 million
2050—18.8 million
is yet another reason we need to get primary prevention into high gear, which is now possible but not getting done
