Hello I used to Tweet but now I only tweet

Massive Scottish poofter, mostly gayposting in response to a society that has gotten high on its own supply of howfin queerphobia
They are STILL counting ballots a week on, what a country

When Rosie Duffield is in on it I think we can safely say the anti-phone campaign in Brianna's name is actively at odds with tackling transphobia

Relatedly, I really hate seeing the affected internet leftist cynicism of "young people who are into politics are weird and it anything we should discourage them" takes, another instance of actually just mystifying and wonkifying political involvement and making the claim a self fulfilling prophecy
Speaking as the former Co-Convener of a political party youth wing, I will die in the ditch of "youth wings are good, actually": the Scottish Greens got 8 solid years of quite intense activism out of me it'd have never have got had the Scottish Young Greens not existed and drawn me in!
Like I'm sorry but the average 20 year old wants to hang out with other 20 year olds, not old people. This is a societally universal phenomenon that has to be adjusted to, not "why won't people just"-ed

The thing is Sonia is not wrong, there is a huge amount of institutional and ideological capture on "the sex and gender issue", it's just that she's so utterly radicalised that she has failed to realise that it's very much in favour of her side.
She uses the word "impartiality" here, but what Sonia Sodha wants from the BBC Director General isn't impartiality at all.

Lots of folk have been saying stuff to the effect of "current culture wars are in large part normal intergenerational discomfort being supercharged by the modern media landscape" only to be met with furious denial that it could just be ageism and this has been just... tweeted it out

"I don't want to play with you anymore" Toy Story image but it's Labour sources dropping Emmanuel Macron patter in favour of Mette Frederiksen fantasies
Aside from the crucial voting system difference, the Social Democrats over this period have haemorrhaged votes to progressive parties and are currently on course for their worst result in 110yrs, while the Green Left are set for their best ever.

The Danish People's Party are currently gaining.
what are the odds that the people in Downing Street briefing this out would also break out in hives at the mere mention of proportional representation?

One of my favourite genres of troubleshooter is when it says "simply go here and press this button", and you go there and the button simply doesn't exist. Thanks for that! Glad your website knows its own layout and options! Super helpful!

By-Election Result analysis: Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss Villages

A big SNP victory and complete Labour collapse, placing behind Reform UK on their best-yet Scottish share, followed on from the conviction of a Labour councillor
By-Election Result: Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss Villages
Background Following hot on the heels of a Stirling by-election last week, we went a little bit further along in the same Holyrood region for Fife's Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss Villages by-election. Unfortunately this was the third vote this term to arise from a Labour councillor being convicted on sex offences in relation to minors, in this case David Graham. He'd been a councillor since 2012, and remained formally Labour affiliated until he was convicted.

In 2013, Lucy Meadows, before she took her own life, faced a press monstering by a Daily Mail columnist that was outrageous enough that the coroner felt the need to speak on the matter. Nowadays, that kind of monstering is just built into the coverage across the board.

In a move that will shock everyone I am using this as another example of why a mixed system is a bit crap and we should have a purely Open PR List based model. I imagine this would be claimed to not be undemocratic as members got to pick the constituency candidates, but in reality that's pish.
Scottish Labour may be picking a fight with its own? 👀

Scottish Labour is considering blocking party members from selecting Holyrood candidates. Party bosses could instead appoint candidates for Lists based on how many voters they contacted during campaigning.

Labour considering blocking party members from selecting Holyrood candidates
EXCLUSIVE: The party's governing body will discuss a proposal tomorrow which would grant List ranking places to the constituency candidates who have worked the hardest.

These are proper Death of the Party (nearly) numbers for the Conservatives, in that they are equivalent to their pre-revival lows in such wards AND sit alongside an inevitable crash in support even in better areas. I've been saying for months they could lose both Glasgow MSPs, for example...
Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss Villages (Fife) by-election, 1st prefs:

SNP: 1594 (42.6%, -4.9)
RUK: 1080 (28.9%, new)
Lab: 778 (20.8%, -19.5)
LD: 99 (2.6%, +0.4)
Alba: 83 (2.2%, +0.9)
Con: 64 (1.7%, -4.8)
Sovereignty: 45 (1.2%, new)
(Greens 2.2% in 2022)

SNP elected stage TBC (3rd time lucky!)

Missed the 70th anniversary of a red-letter date in the history of science yesterday, and unfortunately there is no safe way to get my bike up to 88mph even if I had a flux capacitor and some plutonium lying about, so having to settle for doing my annual watch a day late

Thinking back to the "Yanks shocked the UK doesn't really have a concept of carrying weapons for self defence and indeed that is illegal" discourse the other day and thinking how here in Glasgow the only time I actually have anything close to fear for my safety is Bonfire Night...

Lunchtime has apparently become mount hunting time (what better time to do boring old game content than when you've only got a short period) and what a rich harvest it has been lately

I... never have to do Dragon Soul again? Okay there's hard mode version but I'm cutting my losses here after years

This may be in the FT piece which I haven't actually read but Neom had been selected as the host city for the 2029 Asian Winter Games, just as a fun reminder of how weirdo freak corruption is very much an international affair
Neom boosters were always so funny. Like no, I'm sorry, that's just not how cities work and it would be bad if it was, leaving aside even the physical impossibility.

One of my most niche killjoy things is when did we develop so many different Moons? Oh, it's a Supermoon this time? A Blood Moon? Oh this time it's apparently a fuckin Beaver Supermoon?

No. Enough. We used to just have a Full Moon and we managed! It sufficed! I hate these SPECIAL MOON TYPE stories!

I realise I used "folk" three times in quick succession here which reminds me of the time a TERF on Twitter told me that people who use the term "folks" need to have their hard drive searched, look, that's just how I speak, I like to say "folks", and not in a folksy way, it's just a word I use!
Also, been reminded in chat with other folk, when you see folk (especially folk elected in 2022) railing against the SNP from a Green (or formerly) perspective, remember that in 2022 there was no stronger mutual flow of preferences than between the SNP and Greens ballotbox.scot/le22-party-p...

International Election Dilettantes: Well now that I've seen the NYC result (hurray, Mamdani won!) I don't have to think about the US anymore

Sophisticated US Election Knowers (read: people who follow @michaelhobbes.bsky.social): Ah now of course time to settle in and see if Wilson wins Seattle

Relatedly, the same outfit that has been giving it "Keir Starmer will simply be the British Emmanual Macron" does not get to have anyonr sniffily go "WELL, I don't think there's anything to learn from an election in" *checks notes* "one of the most culturally dominant cities in the Anglosphere"
British Labour MPs trying to associate themselves with Mamdani's win all "how do you do, fellow lefties" style, as if they aren't the same sort of right-enabling establishment he was a reaction against, embarrassing, the cheek, the nerve, the gall, the audacity and the gumption required
