"Don't make space for young people to be engaged in politics and mock as weird and offputting those that are" isn't a recipe for normal politicians to arise later in life, it's effectively artificial selection in favour of the weird and offputting who then end up with a greasy pole head start!

Like I picked up politics through the intellectual version of a random genetic mutation: nothing about my background (not spoken about at home), school (deprived area) or university (post-1992 on a vocational degree) primed me for being intensely into politics, it just *happened* after I voted once

Given list MSPs represent their whole region, not just the constituency they may be selected for, all regional party members should get a say on who goes on the list and where; and if the system was purely open list based, it'd also mean voters get a final say over list rankings at the election

(E.g. the Greens, and I will acknowledge that I am actually substantially responsible for this policy coming in for 2021, only allow already selected list candidates to nominate for constituencies, but they pick list candidates first and don't organise on a Constituency Party basis, so, bit diff)

So there's a degree to which this is actually kind of fine but wrong way round: entirely reasonable given it's a mixed system to basically put everyone on both ballots and thus not allow "new entrants" but given lists can be 12 and a region has max 10 constituencies this is a bit sus
